Buck Johnson, besides having long arms and reach, had a huge leap as well. Does anybody remember him dunking from the FT line?
You forget that McDyess played there as well. I remember going to one his games and watching him throw down on everyone. He must have had 10 dunks in the game! I remember Hollywood Robinson was a badass dunker as well. Hollywood later went on to play for the T-Wolves and I think he ended his career in Europe. Alabama has a great basketball tradition considering it is a football school.
I dont think he is much more than 8 inches off the ground in this picture. but he definetly has more than a 9 inch vertical
I think that is an unreasonable stereotype. I think that Yao is quite athletic, regardless of his 7'5" height. Trust me, he can jump higher than 9 inches.
im 6'6 205 and i have a 36 inch vertical...but im only 16 years old but i can get my head about a little above mid range of the net
Thats what i try to tell people. 50" is really alot especially for a guy 6'6 or 6'7. I have arms that are pretty avg for a guy 6'4. I touched 8ft and measured 34" vertical which means I'm 10" over the rim. If a guy 6'7 and measures up to 8ft 4 or 8ft 5 and has a vertical of say 40", he would be pretty close to 2ft over the rim which is above the top of the square. Now imagine a guy with long arm or a guy 6'8 or even 6'10 like McDyess, who might mesure over 9ft or so, with a 50", he's 3ft over the rim whcih is almost top of the backboard. Why do anything other than dunk all the time?
Those verticals aren't offcial anyway and doesn't mean anything anyway. McDyess might have 1-inch or 2 inches vertical on Amare - Amare would still dunk on him. Stephon Marbury has a 40'' vertical btw and Shawn Marion 41''
Dermarr Johnson touched the top of the backboard in his Hawks workout. Wasn't there a Globetrotters guy who could dunk on 12'?
When young and healthy, he was just scary. I remember when I was at high school, they played an Olympic game on TV between Russia and USA. Sabonis didn't even look like a human. When he jumped and dunked over everybody, I thought I was watching a Cartoon. Years later, I watched "Space Jam" and those alien Monsters just reminded me of Sabonis.
Yeah, Sabonis would have been a top 10 center of all time if he had played in the NBA in his prime. But as of now, I doubt that he has over a 20 inch vertical. His legs seem pretty much gone.
does anyone know what those olympic high jump champs' verticals are? you guys sound like the best leapers in the world all play basketball!
I saw this on a site and figured this is who you meant. His name is Michael "Wild-Thing" Wilson. Edit: Hmm...I guess I forgot how to post pictures. Just go here to see a picture: http://www.geocities.com/highriser032/streetball032.html edit2: Hmm...I don't know. I saw what other guys do when posting pics and I did the same thing and got a red x, so maybe this site just sucks when it comes to posting pics. Maybe you would have to stick the address in your address bar or whatever to see it, but I figured just giving a link would be ok...man, I sure rambled on about nothing for a while.
TJ Ford (5'11'') had two ridiculous dunks this year. One at Baylor he caught the ball off the board and put it down. If anybody was there, Jesusu it was nasty. The second was a couple of games later at the Erwin Center against A&M or one of the Okie teams. His head was above the rim, remember he's 5'11''. TJ later said it was his favorite. The strength trainer said that they measured his vert at around 43'' but that he was much higher on that particular dunk (distance from his head to the rim=49'') also, check out the NCAA dunk contest from 1999 for Michael Wilson's dunks. the basic off the backboard tomahawk was brought to new heights that night.
