If this is was a movie, a good last resort would be: 1. Call in a ringer - someone the ho will want to bang. 2. Get her caught having sex with the ringer by your friend. 3. ??? 5. Profit. You can't let a good friend get sucked into being the hero for the ho. If he wants to rescue somebody, I recommend a mail order bride from the Philippines. He'd have much better odds.
I feel bad for the kids for a different reason. I would hope the man dating their mom is serious and not just looking for a good time. It's very hard being a child of divorce. A long time ago I went out with a woman who had two kids. The kids were terrific, but the mom and I didn't click. We all went out a couple of times and I could tell the kids liked having a father figure around. I can imagine how hard it is to see your mom not in a steady relationship.
