@brianmctaggart: More big news from Astros. http://t.co/mDPUQDOoCt has learned RHP Vincent Velasquez is getting called up. More: http://t.co/co2zM9oAlu
Another must promotion from the organization. Astros sending Hernandez out another start would be absolutely idiotic. Appel hopefully gets his **** together as well. McCullers and Velasquez have left the former number 1 pick in the dust.
The one that really screw his opportunity was Straily, he had a lot of chances, but struggled at triple a, while the young guys did great. It was Straily's spot, but he did not win it nor deserve it.
Really like this move... VV is finally healthy, and when healthy, the minors have not been a challenge for him. If Appel has any sort of competitive bone in his body, he has to be chompin at the bit... Even a somewhat competent performance would have had him up for consideration for promotion. Where's they guy who told the Pirates to go f themselves?
DFA'ing Hernandez? Never mind. Just read where Hernandez will be moved to bullpen. Still curious as to the corresponding roster move for Correa. I assume they could move Feldman to 60 day.
Fun Fact: Chris Devenski's WHIP is better than both of them. Kind of interesting, our last 3 pitching callups (counting Feliz's cup of coffee) have come from AA. I guess McCullers was technically AAA, but he never pitched there. Really surprised that someone between Asher Woj, Peacock, and Straily (and Alex White for that matter) hasn't really distinguished himself in AAA.
Is it that surprising? Most teams have a bunch of "filler" starting at AAA. In case of injury, or when desperate, you can turn to them... But all of them are of advanced age and had their careers stalled for specific reasons, most of them being that they just aren't good enoug (yet). Odds are, at least one of them will be a difference maker on an MLB team at some point... But for now, we just gotta pray for no more injuries, or that Appel makes a meteoric rise.
