Hey it worked for the Knicks under Van Gundy.

And it's even worked into boring people into thinking Van Gundy is anything more than a mediocre coach, who coached mediocre teams, till they quit on him.

I think that was in reference to the New Orleans job, that is, the deep south. Texas is not part of the deep south, despite it's proximity.

Plus, no state income tax and it seems like half the players live here.

I wouldn't rule this out just yet.

I think (hope) the original poster was being sarcastic.

I just assume that all statements indicating Vecsey is a good journalist are rooted in sarcasm. works for me..

I just find it interesting that every New York daily has a report of JVG's Houston interest.

Actually Vecsey is right a lot of times, but throws so much crap out there his % is pure crap.

You see, the problem with our team was that we were good at NOTHING. We had NO identity, ZERO definition.

Van Gundy would mold this team into a defensive team, while players like Francis and Yao will always get their 20ppg, regardless of coach.

word leaks in NYC very quickly. I'll hear about a trade the knicks will make from a guy at the basketball park across the streat from a HS a month before its in the news, and a month and a half before it happens.

if thats whats being said, it may have some substance.

In kind of related news, TNT just reported that Larry Brown might not return to the Sixers next season. Clutch has mentioned in the past that Larry was a possibility. Maybe Brown is holding out the see what the coaching situation is in Houston as well.

New York Knicks with Van Gundy are a playoff team and go to the Eastern Conference Championship. Without Van Gundy the Knicks go to the lottery. Van Gundy = Good Coach.

I don't know about you guys ,but to me ,Peter Vecsey is just one of those crap insider , when it comes to rumors. Don't count on any of the facts are going to happen.

I don't know about you guys but, How come he was never been seen nearer or guest on TNT, after he said about Duncan will definitely play along the side of McGrady in Orlando.
    HMMM!

actually if i remember correctly, when van gundy quit the knicks, the knicks were on their longest winning steak during that season, about 6 game winning streak if i remembered right. that's still longer than any winning streak the rockets have and the rockets have more talent than the knicks.

he quit because he wanted to spend more time with his family. he gave up a lot of money on that salary of his.

Being from NYC I've seen a lot of JVG in action.

It's a bit limiting to call him a defensive coach. He is an exceptional coach in all facets of the game, from what I have seen. His teams play tough, dogged defense, but that's not all. Remember that he took an untalented, short, old Knicks team to the finals without a superior PG, after losing Ewing, with two shooting gaurds on the floor at the same time, one impotent for long stretches (Houston), one consistantly out of control (Sprewell).

He was a Pat Riley assistant for a long time and it shows; his undertalented, successful Knicks teams had a lot in common with those undertalented, succesful Heat teams before Zo went down. I like the way JVG handles things with the press too, Riley style. It is almost impossible to keep things in house with the NYC media, but both Riles and JVG did a remarkable job of keeping things cool and quiet despite the casual chaos that are the Knicks.

He did a great job and made them watchable at times.

I disagree that you need a young guy to relate to the Rockets. They need a calm, but athoratative teacher. Francis will respond to JVG, when he sees what he's about, and everyone else will follow Francis. In particular I think E Griffin and Francis could really really benefit from JVG as coach. Three years under JVG and I really believe that EG will make you forget about R. Jefferson. I predict Francis would make that final step of honing and controlling his game with JVG at the helm. I've always liked Rudy, but I don't have confidence in the team's ability to maximize its potential under him. More than anything else you might hear about JVG, that is his trademark (just like Riles), he squeezes every ounce of quality out of his team's talent. I'd love to see what he could do with some actual talent in Houston.

    Glendelicious-

I remember those Knick teams also. Van Gundy maximized the little talent that he had with the Knicks. Hell, he even made Marcus Camby look like a superstar.

Maybe he can do the same with Eddie Griffin.

Van Gundy would be the wrong direction to take. We need more of a Doug Moe mentality watching the Sac/Dallas series...

I know you were probably kidding, because the Chronicle's history shows that it is more responsible than that. I don't think the Chronicle would run with such speculation without getting the word from one or two very reliable sources within the organization.

Rockets have more talent than the Knicks had?

    Sprewell > Posey
    Johnson = Griffin
Camby = Yao (Camby had superior stats, but Ill call it equal here)
    Houston > Mobley
    Ward < Francis
    Jackson > Moochie
    Thomas > Taylor
    Rice (2000)> Rice (2002)

1-8, the 2000-2001 Knicks were much more talented than we were.

Right. The only news that he gets right is news that ever everyone else already knows.

"My inside sources tell me that Moochie Norris has a lot of hair and sucks."

    Thanks, Pete...
