You're absolutely right, many of the Rockets have limited offensive ability. But I was merely alluding to the fact that JVG was responsible for the selection, grooming, training, and playing time of these players you mention, Luther, Shane, Chuck, Rafer... He made them part of his 8-man rotation, and he gave them major minutes...out of the 14 players willing and able to play for him. We do have some players, or could've had some players (Mike James), that slash to the basket and play uptempo. But JVG wanted all those spot-up shooters on the floor around Yao/Mac, he didn't give the slashers like Snyder and V-Span enough opportunity to contribute. And Bonzi...not a slasher, but can create his own shot and go to the basket. JVG not playing those other types of players he had + JVG's boring and predictable offensive plays = no offensive balance, very 1-dimensional. He was responsible, imo.
I say Mario Elie with Rudy T backing him up on the bench. John Lucas or Dell Harris would be okay with me also.
NBA.com News Flash May 6, 2007 12:42am ET Report: Van Gundy to Leave Rockets According to a report in the NEW YORK POST, and expanded upon by ESPN.COM, "Saturday's Game 7 loss to the Jazz was the last for Jeff Van Gundy as the Houston Rockets' coach ... Citing an 'impeccable source,' The Post reported that Van Gundy is leaving NBA coaching for the forseeable future. According to the source, Van Gundy's decision isn't based on the first-round series loss to the Jazz." I'm disappointed in Houston Rockets fans. Even if this pans out to not be true the fact that people are celebrating this is a testament to how little we really deserve. The best thing to happen to this team last year was JVG. Without him we fail to make it to the playoffs let alone grabbing HCA. I supported him through and through. Not because I was a fan of his stubbornness but because he absolutely wouldn't let these guys quit. I think Jeff meant a lot to these guys which are only reaffirmed by Tracy's words about him after the game. I'm watching ESPN News and it's saying now no retirement is decided so this all may be premature. I guess you have to consider the source. Chron.com
JVG NOT GONE YET! http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/4779621.html May 6, 2007, 12:25PM Van Gundy not stepping down, but future with team unsure Coach has a non-guaranteed season left on his contract, but owner hasn't decided if he will return or be fired By JONATHAN FEIGEN Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle Amid reports that Jeff Van Gundy would not return as Rockets coach, Van Gundy said Sunday he has not decided to step down and Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said he has not reached any decision about Van Gundy's future. Van Gundy has one non-guaranteed season remaining on his contract. Told that there has been speculation that he would fire Van Gundy, Alexander said, "That's totally false. "There is absolutely no truth to that. That's false, totally false. That decision has not been made." Van Gundy strongly denied he had reached a decision. He has often said that the decision about next season was not only the team's, but said Sunday that he has not decided to step down. "I haven't even thought about that yet," Van Gundy said. "It's just 12 hours after we lost. There has been speculation about my job going on the whole year. Anybody that saying that (that he has chosen to step down as Rockets coach), I have no idea why they would say that. "There is no significance to anything other than we lost. That's the only significant thing." Asked if he has meetings with Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson, assistant general manager Daryl Morey or Van Gundy planned to discuss Van Gundy's future, Alexander said that answering any "volatile questions" would lead to more speculation, but would only say he has not made a decision. "Jeff has talked to you about that, and he wouldn't lie," Alexander said. "And I told you I haven't made a decision and you know I have never lied to you. Both stories are untrue. There is no truth to this." But while Van Gundy remained the Rockets on Sunday, a day after the Rockets were eliminated in the playoffs' first round, neither could say how long that would remain true. jonathan.feigen@chron.com
"Van Gundy has one non-guaranteed season remaining on his contract." I take that means it is a team option. Then JVG won't be fired but instead it will be us not picking up the option?
UNTIL THERE IS A PRESS RELEASE FROM THE ROCKETS I"M NOT FULLY BELIEVING THIS ONE. When Van Gundy stands in front of the cameras or a Rockets representative actually says it. Then I will believe...."DING DONG THE WICKED WITCH IS DEAD"
ESPN just reported JVG will meet with the press Monday. JVG's denial probably stems from the fact that he wants a chance to tell his players, coaches and there are no doubt people in the organization he wants to speak to also.
Hmm.. This is a business. If you can't produce to meet the expectation, then you are fired. Period. Nothing personal at all.
talk about playing with our emotions. I am still depressed about last night. this was probably the most likely chance to get through to the finals for the next few years. Dallas is prob not gonna make the same mistake next year, we will have a new coach, spurs will be the spurs, the hornets will be healthy, and memphis will have oden most likely. not looking good... it wouldn't matter if we had pat riley or phil j.. we have more issues than a coach.
OMG NO, Chris Sheridan is saying JVG has been pushing Tom Thibadeau to become a head coach for years. And he is also naming all these other random people. I don't want another halfcourt defensive coach damnit.
