Freak, how was the sound last night? My buddy just told me he went and the sound was pretty bad in that arena.
Couldn't hear the vocals that well, especially for the first half of the show. Eddie's amp may have been turned up too high.
I thought the SA show was great. Sure, the vocals could have been a bit clearer, but the band sounded awesome. 8.5/10
There's no chance those backing vox were taped, is there? They sounded amazing. I always attributed that to Mike Anthony for some reason. They literally sounded exactly like they do on record.
Ya know, I just listened to a vid of them performing Jamie's Cryin'.... and it sounded pretty good. Wish I could be there. Can't spend the money. Here's the vid: <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CNJMmNBz-Zc&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CNJMmNBz-Zc&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
Dude, that was one of my favorite parts of the night. I love it when he goes off. There should have been more of that; most of the night ran like a greatest hits set with not enough DLR banter in between. He should've been featured more this time around. This tour is all about Diamond Dave coming back. That's the only reason people are paying that much to see it.
I've seen videos from earlier in the tour and they sounded like crap, so I would guess that they weren't recorded - just that they're getting tighter the more they play. Also, if you watch that video of Jamie's Crying, at the end they all sing together and it's not 'in time' so I don't think there is any way they could pull that part off with recorded vocals, since they would have to be played with a click in tempo.
Where's your damn review, MR. MEOWGI? Edit: Oops...thought the show was last Friday night in Houston when it was actually Monday night. My bad.
I called a buddy of mine a while ago who is at the concert. I asked him what song they were playing and he said, "I think it's 'Somebody Call Me A Doctor', the sound is horrible in the upper deck." That's pretty bad when you can't tell what song they are playing. He's supposed to call me when it's over.
Saw the show tonight, and it was great. Eddie must have dried out, because he looked like he could play as well as ever. Wish Michael Anthony was still there, but I can live without him if the tradeoff is no Hagar and we get to see Roth and the material from 1978-84.
I saw them in vegas 2nd show and overall it was great, seemed to have the same sound issues that you guys are reporting from the more recent shows. One thing I did notice and like was that Eddie's rig was center stage, it's where he belongs. With that big **** eating grin, Dave looks like the cat that ate the canary. I understand he's probably the happiest guy on earth right now, but for God's sake quit smiling. I too noticed that several times it sounded just like the recordings, but I attributed that to the crowd singing along. I've always liked the Dave era better for the fact that the music always sounded tougher, a little heavier. I read somewhere years ago that the reason behind that was that the difference between Dave and Sammy's voice. Sammy's higher register allowed Eddie to tune his guitar to a true G whereas with Dave's lower voice Eddie would tune down. Thus the lower heavier sounding guitar. After waiting 20 years to see these guys, I was pleased with the outcome. I just hope they put out some new tunes at some point.
I saw the show last night. I thought it was really good. The band overall sounded good, and Dave sounded MUCH better than I thought he would have. In fact, the weakest performer overall was Eddie. I had seen them before in the Van Hagar days, and he seemed fairly sloppy IMHO. Not saying he sounded sloppy at all times, but he can't play as clean as he used too.
I personally think Eddie has always been "sloppy" in concert. I don't think it's a matter of EVH playing it as "clean as he used to". Clean is boring. I've always considered sloppiness a part of EVH's style. EVH is never going to play it just like it was recorded, either.
EVH has a bit of rep for performing drunk off his ass. The last VH tour with Sammy was in particular especially brutal. From the vid clip above, EVH did not appear to be drunk. Hmm. Maybe i am wrong. Maybe he is a little drunk. Or maybe he cleaned up his act since he is touring with his son. Who knows?
That was a long time ago and Eddie has been through a lot since then, including a divorce, hip replacement surgery, mouth cancer and most recently rehab. All indications are that he is now 100% clean and healthy. From what I understand, the whole reason Wolfgang is in the band is to help Eddie stay out of trouble on the road. Before he agreed to this tour, he had a talk with Sting about how great it is to tour around the world with your son. (Sting's son is the singer for the band currently opening up for The Police on their world tour) I would think that traveling around the world playing in front of 30,000 people every night with your brother and son would be pretty therapeutic for Eddie right now. Anyway, my buddy went last night (and called in sick to work today....) and told me it was a great concert. Wish I could have gone.
I thought the word was that EVH was pissed at Anthony for touring with Hagar. I really hope it's what you said though. I still don't like it, whatever the reason.
