Actually, I meant in terms of attractions, nightlife, etc., which I understood to be Van Gundy's hang-up with Houston.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

Houston is an up and coming city: everyone loves HOUSTON (mostly sports and entertainers) Shaq,Penny hardaway, Nick Van Exel, Antoinio Mcdyess,Sam Cassall, Robert Horry, Mario Elie, Kenny Smith, and it's plenty of more people who lives here, it sort of like Houston and Atlanta are the places to be except Miami, L.A. and N.Y.

Houston is a pretty city!! I dont care what yall say come here in the summer it's beatiful

To me, the interviewer seemed to be saying that Houston shut down kinda early, not JVG. JVG just said, "I'd tear down such-and-so '94 banner" in a joking way.

What is there to do in Cleveland? Other than the mall and the rock n roll hall of fame? Please, indulge me.

Cleveland is not a bad place. It gets a bad reputation with all of the mistake by the lake jokes. But Northeastern Ohio is actually a very scenic part of the country, much more beautiful than Houston.

TRUE FACT: The square milage of Houston is larger than that of Rhode Island and the Nation of Israel. That's freakin' large.

i just moved here in houston just like 9 months ago and i came from the philippines.. i first stopped at california and stayed for two months. and eventhough california has a big number of asians lving there, especially filipinos, i thouight it would be just like home, it aint . people in cali are snobbish, "i-think-im-too-perfect-to-talk-to-you" kind of people and i hated it so much.. i went to new york for a month and it i cant live in a place where people dont sleep. lol. so, i moved here in houston with my family and houstonians are the most friendliest people in america. i mean, houston may not be nice compared to california or new york, but the people who live in here make this city one of the most greatest cities not only in america, but in the world. so houston is now my new home.

JVG, this is the place to stay if you want a better life for your family. this is the place to be.

How come he hasn't accepted the job offer if it is so great?

Hou Chronicle reports that Wizards have contacted him also.

He seems like an East Coast guy to me.

    Who knows?

I always thought Houston was attractive to Southeast/South Asians (forgive my generalities) because they're used to the climate. In fact, I imagined Indians, Filipinos, and Vietnamese would shrug and say, "What humidity?"

Houston does have nice people, though. I think it's just a major move for people having lived in NY state for 14 years.

Still, would JVG and/or his wife choose the Wizards just to be on the East Coast? Maybe, but I still think he wants to coach the Rockets, and Les can't afford to screw this up over money.

that's true. the climate here is just like back in the philippines. houston is just a tad bit hotter. just like 5-7 degress hotter. no difference actually. and yes, houston does have a large population of southeast asians.. houston also have one of the largest filipino communities in america. just go to methodist hospital, everywhere you may go, your bound to see a filipino working there. i think in every department of the methodist hospital has a lot of filipinos especially in nursing and computer-related...

    Hello, Knicks fan here.

I think Van Gundy will be a good fit here. He is a terrific defensive mind, and play a very physical, grinding East Coast defense. Under VG, the Knicks were always at the top of the league in opp fg% and points allowed, even when the Knicks didn't have great individual defenders, they played good team defense. In 2000, he set an NBA record for holding the opponent under 100 points for the most # of consecutive games (30 I believe).

He's not as creative on offense, relying too much on isolation plays. He tends to go to a single player if he's hot repeatedly on iso until he's not hitting anymore. He doesn't like to use his bench and keeps a short rotation. It takes a while for a player to earn VG's trust, but once he does, the coach is going to be fiercely loyal to a fault. And he's never afraid to throw himself in the middle of a on-court fray to protect his players.

Someone said that VG doesn't like Houston's night life. If he hasn't changed over the past year or so, it shouldn't be a problem. He has never been the type of person to enjoy life, a self-described eternal pessimist. He obsessively watches game tape, but as a result he's probably the most prepared coach in the league.

And he's also a strict disciplinarian. One of the Knicks said his practices are like boot camp and easily worse than playing in an actual game.

Also, VG's assistants are solid IMO. Tom Thibodeau is regarded as head-coaching material around the league.

I think VG is a fascinating character. You guys should enjoy his post game conferences if he does come here. He's got a great self-depracating humor and he's always distrustful of the media, especially NY media. He got caught up playing Garden politics to keep his job in '99 and got Grunfeld fired. I think it's ultimately the reason he left, because he couldn't see a future with our idiotic management, but I think most Knicks fans are still a little angry that he abandoned the team mid-season.

I wrote a fantasy story a month after VG resigned from the Knicks. Read it for your own amusement:

    Welcome Linda!

Very nice way of marketing, eh?

Well...what you said about his offense. Kinda sounds like Rudy's. Not good.

But all of his associates say he is going to change his style a bit...so I hope.

    Nice website!

    Okay.

    Does anyone know if....

Can Jeff Van Gundy accept the Rockets offer to become our coach?

Because he is still under contract with the New York Knicks.

Is he waiting until August 1st?

Or are we going to give compensation and a draft pick to the Knicks if we get him?

Basically, if we sign JVG now, we have to pay the "buyout" clause since JVG is still technically signed on with the Knicks. By my recollection, that figure was $1M maybe $2M. There was some talk that the Rockets may just give up a 2nd round future draft pick in lieu of this buyout. I can't imagining the Knicks "not" wanting to collect on this free lunch. Meanwhile, while JVG can technically wait till the expiration of this buyout... there is always a premium for certainty in knowing who your coach is next year. I can't imagine this buyout being the reason for the hold up.

My guess is that it's going to be a long term contract and JVG is deciding whether or not he can see himself in Houston that long.

    :D

I've always thought so too, whenever that ex-coach of the Raptors was suing Marcus Camby for badmouthing him, they asked Jeff Van Gundy if they had talked about it at all, he said, "Yeah, we talked about it for about 10 seconds, 9 of those were laughing." All the media guys started laughing, he does have a great sense of humor.
