Like I said I lived there for 22 yrs. It's diverse for some cultures but not others. You're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine. Houston has good restaurants but NY has great ones in comparison. I've lived in both places.

Houstonians are the nicest people in the world. I live in Austin, and most Austinites (formally known as californians and yankees) are asses in comparison.

Yeah, I think you have a point ArtV. I modified the signature. You're going to look like a pro if you're right and I'll look like a moron for so many Pro Van Gundy posts, but we'll know soon enough.

Good Lord, somebody move this to another forum.

As far as JVG only having coached one other team, so what? He did a great job with limited talent, and messed-up management that exacerbated an already overpaid and talentless roster because the NY pressure to do something, DO SOMETHING, to fix this mess, is overwhelming.

Did JVG bail on the Knicks? Yes. And good for him. You can only turn chicken **** into chicken soup for so long.

And why is this even an issue? In the transcript, the interviewer mentioned that Houston is Texas, that is closes down early, etc. Not JVG. Sure, he didn't rush to our defense, but so the hell what? He had to be circumspect about the job that it seemed like he knew he had.

Me, I was all for JVG before I knew Larry Brown would be available. Now, I'm all for him again. Defense and discipline. And a return to the playoffs (fingers crossed; and I repeat, fingers crossed, not middle fingers extended).

Is it me or does this announcment to the public that we are going to offer a job to VanGundy sounds kinda fishy? Why not wait for tomorrow after a contract agreement to announce it? I heard over the radio that JVG was talking to the Wizards today. Is it because CD is scared that he might sign with somebody else?

It does seem fishy. I think the front office would really feel the heat if it looked like they weren't really going strong after Van Gundy after Brown chose Detroit. Maybe if Van Gundy doesn't sign with us, they'll say they did everything they could to sign him and thus they won't face as much heat.

I don't think it's fishy. Besides, why in the world would van gundy want to coach for that sad situation in washington?

    Two words: Money & Power.

I've never heard a GM looking for a coach and announce to everyone that they have offered a job to a coach that's coming in for a second interview. CD also said that he informed MD of the news that they will offer JVG instead of MD. It's just a little unusual to me. Normally you would think you should have everything finalized before you say these things to the public.

Not too many coaches have been to the finals and VG has..Not saying hes the best coach out there but the guy does have good points, for one Defense and knows how to coach the big man...heck he learned under one of the best coachs in pat riley...plus we need a damn coach...get this coaching search over with and worry about the players on the team. Get them going in the right direction, i could careless if its VG, Tim floyd for that matter as long as the coach produces WINS...

Rudy is gone, let it go. Les made a good business decision.

For all the "...Van Gundy may hate Houston..." people, consider this:

He was rumored to be considering the Cleveland job.

    As in Cleveland, Ohio.

I'm not trying to diss Cleveland, it seems like a great city. But it's even more un-NYC than Houston is.

Honestly, I could care less if he likes Houston or not, I've become rather lukewarm on Van Gundy. He did do a good job in NY with a mediocre collection of talent, though.

Isn't Cleveland's nickname "The Mistake By the Lake" I've never been there so I wouldn't really know.

As long as our new coach brings enthusiasm I will be happy. Would've liked LB because I think he would've helped devolop SF. I also like Dunleavy, but more from a former Houston player standpoint (keep it in the family) than his coaching resume. If VG it is, then VG it will be. If nothing else, he has already coached a team with a rich tradition (like ours!:D ) fairly successfully. I guess, for my thinking, we could do much worse.;)

Actually, I think the old Cleveland football stadium was called "The Mistake by the Lake."

Cleveland itself was "The mistake on the lake", I'm originally from there.... (pre 1984)

It's absolutely pouring cats and dogs downtown right now. Van Gundy (hopefully) will hate Houston... He shouldn't be looking to coach U of H, he's not that good....

Cleveland is actually more like NYC than is Houston. There are countless people, including media giants like Imas, who have gone from one to the other (and back, sometimes).

Houston is another world to New Yorkers. To which I say, thank you'.

Cleveland is by far more NY like. It is a cross between NYC and Chicago in many ways, a little more Chicago-midwest.

Houston is vast and spread out and downtown is a spec compared to manhattan. It is getting better daily though and has huge potential. I've lived downtown for a few years now and by 2004 there will be a pretty vibrant north downtown area going with the arena, stadium, rail, hotels, and restaraunt/clubs/shops.

Most of the sports guys live in Sugar Land out to the SW.

Eighth seeds make the NBA Finals? Even without their 2nd best player for the final series?
