Valanciunas' team believes that Rockets would select him if he can't reach a buyout

aelliott, you're 100% correct (as usual).

However, in order to accomplish your preferred method, the Rockets would actually need to have cap space. But with the amount of guaranteed salary already on the books, and with the team likely to try to re-sign Yao and/or Hayes, they may just opt not to use that space.

If that's the case, then the "less cost effective" method would be the preferred one from a cap standpoint.

Still, I would probably be okay just letting him season over in Europe for another year.

So, . . . You're turned off by this, even as you recognize that it's sensible?

Llull has only played two seasons in Spain since being drafted by the Rockets. There is no place in the rotation for him next season (although there may be room for him in 2012-13 after Dragic's contract is up). Would you rather he (or Dragic, whose minutes he would steal) just sit at the end of the bench

Isn't it BETTER that he's not taking up a roster spot or cap room while still continuing to get better?

Hasn't his trade value gone up in two years? (Hint: It has.)

He's got value in trade comparable to that of "a (mid- to late) future first round pick," which teams are trying so hard to stockpile to create asset loads to acquire stars.

I'm actually quite pleased with the Llull pick. Now, more than in 2009.

Draft him and send back to Utah to be with him own people. In exchange we ransom Big Al back to the civilized world to be reunited with his father KMac.

Something I've always wondered.. Why do players that are pros in the euroligas have to enter the NBA via the draft?
Anyways, he looks good from the video clips I've seen of him, then again so did Hasheem. But unlike Hasheem, basketball seems to come naturally to Jonas. At 240, he will need to bulk up a tad bit to play the center position in the Nba. 265 by the time he is 23 would be nice.

Foreign players can declare for the NBA draft (basically) any year in which they're between the ages of 19 to 22. They become automatically draft-eligible when they turn 22. If a foreign player goes undrafted after that year, he becomes a free agent and can be signed by any NBA team.

    Hope this helps explain things.

    Bima,

The original proposal required the Rockets to sign Newley. In order to do that you'd have to have $500K in cap space (since the NBA Rookie Exception only includes 1st round picks...which Newley wasn't).

So, under either of the two scenario's you'd have to have $500K in cap space.

Under the Newley scenario we'd get Valanciunas, burn an additional $500K in cap space, pay an additional $500K in salary to Newley and also lose the rights to Newley.

If you just pay a straight $1M buyout then you get Valanciunas and burn an additional $500K in cap space.

The second scenario saves you half a million and you retain the rights to Newley and take the exact same cap hit.

aelliott, what "NBA Rookie Exception" are you talking about? To my knowledge, a team can pay up to $500k to a foreign team for ANY player without regard to the cap. Also, as a second round pick whose draft rights are owned by the Rockets, they can sign him to the league minimum without regard to the cap.

Yeah, perhaps. But I'm Basing it on everything I've seen, read and heard about Llull in the past two years.

anchel, can you back me up on this?

    Touché!

But in all fairness, the Houston Rockets are in a different place now (rebuilding) than they were in 2006 (title contenders).

I wonder if the buyout situation is being used by Valanciunas' camp to discourage certain teams from picking him. For example, lets say they feel pretty confident they can reach a buyout agreement, they don't want the guy ending up in Cleveland or Milwaukee and wouldn't mind having him in Washington or Houston. It would make some sense for them to publicly state that Valanciunas has a sticky buyout situation, then secretly inform the teams that they favor about the positive buyout news.

One thing to note: It's all under current CBA that expires July 1. Nobody knows what's gonna happen next and with all this buyout stuff too

don't forget about rookie scale salary. It would decline dramatically even under current CBA. Under next this move is going to look much much costly than even nowadays

They thought they were title contenders. We didn't get to the 2nd round until Ron joined us.

I don't think so. Morey has never had a pick that high.
