Engineers gave airbags a more explosive force to factor in people who refuse to wear seatbelts. If they didn't, the airbags wouldn't severely hurt children and the elderly.
0 How many am I prepared to stop? It depends...Usually I carry 10 in the Glock and 2 spare Hi cap mags. That makes a total of 40 rounds. Factor in a double tap on each and that makes 20 criminals. Even more if they stop at the sight of a weapon. Oh...factor in a knife...who knows.
The problem is when we say "Don;t take guns out of the hands of CHL holders just because they walk on a campus" You guys say we want to hand out guns to 19 year olds. When we say "its possible less gun control could have stopped it" you guys say we promised that it could. We just have a problem with taking away their ability to defend themselves if they so chose.
Forgive me for giving a stupid and absurd example but this is a principle that should be considered concerning government abuse- Suppose President Bush went 'wacko' fearing a Democratic victory in 2008, there was a bombing on U.S. soil and he declared martial law. But Pres. Bush goes a step further and begins to rapidly broaden his executive powers taking direct command of the military and starts sweeping operations to identify and clear up domestic threats by arresting many middle eastern citizens and so called dissedent voices, including the ACLU. He then takes control by executive order of all media and government functions. Under this scenario (as outlandish as it is) the populace of the country begins to react in outrage and the situation escalates until there is a broad military crack down ordered against our own cities. There is confusion and panic especially with local law enforcement but by and large the government is out of control and it becomes a nightmare. Now here is the scenario, if the Pres. were to become this crazed in his thinking and this did happen our servicemen who are being asked to carry out his orders would have to use force against there countymen. If the citizens are armed it would present our good troops a deterrent to fighting. If the citizens were unarmed they would probably not hesitate to follow orders since lives were not at stake. Absurd as this is, this is one of the most basic principles behind the right to bear arms and in general I believe this should be protected constitutionally as a civil liberty. What I do not believe is that there should not be some reasonable gun control that limits the impact 'psycho' citizens can have on our society. I am all for limiting as much as possible the use of guns in the public.
Was I over the top?? Yea, but I did it prove a point. I don't know you personally, Falcons Talon. All I have to go by is what you say here. Someone who I love and they love me once got so mad at me that they grabbed my arm and left a bruise that lasted 8 days. My point is that you never know how people are going to react when they get upset, even ones that you think you know better than anyone else (the ones you love). So, yea you or any other complete stranger carrying a gun would make me feel very uneasy. From what I have read, I have no doubt that you are a responsible gun owner, but I would like to observe you (from a pretty safe distance) in how you handle yourself when you get really upset. Are you telling me that you have never, ever, at least once, thought about using your gun on someone - even if it was just to scare them and not pulling the trigger? Considering the temper I have seen from you on this board, I would be very surprised if you answered "no". I am not out to yank your chain dude - I am trying to let you see what the other side sees and what we are seeing is some scary ****. **** that really doesn't need to be there, IOO (in our opinion).
Any conviction of domestic violence no matter how severe flags and denies any gun purchase in the US.
Honestly, I hope I am never in that situation. But if I am, I am either making my way out of there without getting shot or if that is not possible, getting behind something to protect myself and hoping that I can survive it. If you are there and want to "take him out", I sure as hell won't stop you. I just hope that it doesn't cause more lives to end.
You don't understand. Your choosing to have guns also allows the criminals and the psychos easier access to guns and it makes it hard for the police to do their job. You carrying your gun, indirectly, creates an environment that is not safe for me and my family. Even if I can carry a gun, what about my daughter? What about your children? Do they carry gun to school?
Any diagnosis of a mentally unstable person is in the FBI database. If you are seriously asking then look up "nics background check"
This Cho dude was just a regular wacko. I've seen his type countless times... Highly educated Asian, fragile, quiet loners showing symptoms of psychosis (a break with reality), generally angry/crusading against the world, obsessed with violence and random trivial things, and with a mean streak... If you guys want to see this in action, join a PVP server in World of Warcraft on any given day and you'll see hundreds of them running around. Sad to say... I think Warcraft should have been prescribed for this kid... Might have relieved some of his stress, and given an outlet/direction to his pent up adolescent frustration/energy/confusion... In my in-group (typical Asian clique) in high school, there were 5 of us. All brilliant over-achievers. One Taiwanese loner/hacker went to college at age 13, got straight A's for 2 years, suffered a psychotic breakdown, and came back to finish up high school during his mental rehab and went on to Caltech. One Korean went with me to Harvard, double-majored in astrophysics/biochemistry, got an offer from Goldman Sachs after his summer internship, and committed suicide in his sophomore year. The Japanese guy joined a consultancy after college, but got totally addicted to Warcraft and got fired from his job, and is still living in WoW 3 years later... One Thai guy, who went to both Harvard and Cambridge with me for his PhD was a closet homosexual which he hid from us for 12 years until he came out 2 years ago (ain't nothing wrong with that)... As for my own roommate in Harvard, he got suspended from Harvard for a year after hacking a girl's account and stalking her... We have weird people all around us teetering along the edge of sanity all the time... sometimes, it's up to us to give them the little support and caring that keeps them connected with reality and the warmth of humanity... God knows I haven't done enough for my friends in my lifetime, and for that I'm truly remorseful.
right. but a counselor at a college isn't generally qualified to give a diagnosis of mental instability. and unless there's a court proceeding where the guy's medical records are made public, they're kept confidential. so again i ask...how could the counselors have done something to stop this, particularly since they couldn't force him to visit a doctor to give a diagnosis in the first place?
I wasn't going down that road. I was just stating that you never know what some people will do when they get upset - whether they are loved ones or strangers. Domestic violence really has nothing to do with it. But for the record, I would forbid my wife from having a gun in the house and she knows that. Luckily, we live in an area where gun violence isn't a problem.
Force and deadly force are two completely different things. Did your loved one use deadly force on you? The fact that I cannot trust a stranger might have a gun and not have good intentions in EXACTLY why I carry a gun. You would then be surprised and a poor judge of character, because I have NEVER considered drawing my gun to "use" on someone, much less to "scare" someone. That has never crossed my mind, and I find myself grateful that you do not own a gun, because if this crosses your mind, without a gun, I fear what kind of person you would be with a gun.
