I don't think this is a gun issue at all.

There have been similar tragedies in Canada, Scotland, Germany etc. Places with much more sane gun laws (in my opionon). One wacko with a gun. That's all it takes.

It ain't about race. It ain't about guns.

I'd rather have my self-defense skills honed then have a gun in my jacket in most situations facing a gun.

Yes - at a long range a gun is more useful if you are trained in it's use. But then again, at a long range you probably can run away.

In close ranges if someone has a gun pointed at you, you have a better chance finding an opportunity to disarm or get away than trying to reach in and pull your weapon out (cause you might get shot first).

If you are close to someone, and your hands up are in a defensive position, you are a split second away from disarming the person - with the opponent not having time to react fast enough. It's not recommended - and the only time that should be tried if you believe that the person has the intent to kill you and this is your best opportunity to make your move.

But I can't see how having a gun is going to do much - as soon as that person sees you reach in, or take out the gun, you're going to get shot.

Where do you teach/take self defensive classes and who is making reccomendations to you? I sure would like to see a 90 pound lady fight off a 200 pound guy. Guns help level the playing field. If I shoot a perp in the chest it won;t matter if he is twice my size.

Who, besides politicians and seven year-olds tries to advance discussions by making fun of the other side?

I have and know some people who study it. For those who don't know it is an unarmed combat system designed by the Israeli military and combines aspects of Karate, Jujitsu and boxing. I don't study it myself but from what I've seen of it it looks pretty affective.

Provided you have the gun with you and can draw aim and fire it intime.

I've seen 90 pound women take down 200 pound guys.

I actually remembered that incident happening. It happened in the mid '90s as I was in Alabama in grad school. When I heard about the shooting at VA Tech, that was the first thing that ran through my mind. And I agree with you, ROXTXIA, that this thread needs to be here because of the tragedy not because of race.

    A couple of other things:

    1) I usually stay away from this forum, but gun control is something I strongly believe in. I wonder how much longer it is going to be before this country gets smart and enacts tougher gun control laws to the point that only the military and police have guns on them. Reading about these "vigilantes" and NRA nutjobs sicken me. One of my best friends (all the way back to kindergarten) is an avid gun nut and I quit going over to his apartment (back in my single days) because he was fanatical about guns. He had a whole room that had nothing but guns in them. Needless to say, this made me feel very uncomfortable.

    2) CaseyH's post about "I bet 30 or so people wish they had guns" has to rank as one of the most r****ded things I have ever read here - probably ever on the Internet. When I read that, I was like "Damn...what can you say to someone who actually feels that way?" Pretty obvious, that logic and reason won't work with this individual.

    3) Giving guns, even if they are concealed (which I don't understand why that makes it any better) to a bunch of 21 year olds on college campuses is also a very r****ded idea. Hell, having guns around any place that has alcohol is a major league recipe for disaster.

    4) This may be the very first time ever on this BBS that I found myself actually agreeing with DaDakota AND Mr. MEOWGI (and after their cat thread, probably the first time that Dakota and Meowgi have been on the same side for something, lol).

    5) Sishir has been way overusing the phrase "internet tough guy" - it is a known fact that I was the one who started using that around here...well, at least in my own mind! :D

Those types of people (paranoid, racist, or whatever) who will want to lash out will probably not distinguish between Chinese and Korean though.

When all the criminals start following all gun laws and respecting all the gun free zones, I will feel comfortable leaving my Glock at a safe in my house and taking it out for only target practice. But since it looks like the bad guys are not in the mood to start playing by the rules, and the "castle doctrine" has very recently been passed here in Texas, I will continue to be prepared to protect myself, my family, and my property from criminals, and yes, if the need ever arose, I would like to think that I would do my best to protect those law abiding citizens that would just as well take the very gun that would protect them out of my hands. Granted, I will continue to respect the gun free zones as mandated by CHL laws.

I invite all you naysayers to sit in a CHL class and educate yourself to what is taught to the CHL applicant and the responsibilities of legally carrying a sidearm.

To think that every 21 year old party monger could go out an get a gun because a campus is not 30.06 is ridiculous. Why have these 21 year old party mongers that live off campus not gotten a weapon already. Once you are 21 in Texas, you can legally purchase a gun and apply for a CHL license.

Many of you must be terrified that every day, there are responsible people legally carrying a sidearm that are aware of their surroundings and are equiped to protect you from those that are carrying illegally with no regard for the law or your safety .

With that, I'll just say "You're Welcome" and walk away from this discussion.

It can be a race issue because the ******* wasn't white and the public is trying to fit him into an easily identifiable mold. I can't believe that Wayne Chang guy received death threats when being alive clearly doesn't make him the shooter.

Anyways I don't mean to redirect the tragedy of the victims.

Yeah, I have to. And she took down someone who knew how to fight. Imagine what quick work she'd make of someone a-hole thinking he was empowered with a gun.

In a short range situation, if someone with a gun faced off with someone who had enough martial arts training - including being able to disarm and had at least one discipline technique (kill move) - i'd pick the martial arts person.

Sure, they'd take a bullet every so often, but here's the thing. The guy with the gun has no idea the other person is capable of disarming him before he can pull the trigger. That's a huge advantage.

Carrying a gun doesn't make you safer - it make it more likely you're going to kill someone unnecessarily for the wrong reason, or that you are going to get yourself killed pulling it out.

Geez - people, don't carry guns around. That's just dumb. If you are concerned about safety - learn how to talk, learn how to defend, and learn how to dial 911 on your cell phone while it's in your pocket.
