Didn't seem like Greg Pop was going to give him much of a chance anyways. Don't think he was cut out though. But the promoting sure as heck got us Scola and that's all that matters.
Couldn't shoot. Turnover machine. Went from TMac in Greece to Tyrone Lue in the USA. Missed his mama in Greece and went home.
This may well be true. It is also true that the new STAFF does boffo with developing guys. KillBill with the Adelman staff might have become hot NBA stuff. Maybe. DM the GM has said, publicly, that V-Span's ship has sailed.
1. Van Gundy didn't like young players 2. VSpan didn't get the minutes he wanted 3. He was a turnover machine - didn't play well.
It's all JVG's fault. He didn't give Vspan his fair share of chances, and you just don't develope oversea young players that way. That can destroy anybody. To be frank, if LBJ play in Europe when he's 20, Europe's JVG type of coach decided LBJ couldn't play since he can't shoot then(LBJ can't shoot well enough in his early days, and his penetration game won't work as well in international game due to reduced 3-pt line and no 3 seconds violation for defender), LBJ will get minutes in garbage time. Then European fans will mock him as garbage as well.
VSpan was not a good fit for the dumb offensive system led by JVG, Yao and TMAC. He was drafted by the wrong team.
We all must congratulate DD for not posting in the first page of this thread. It's very impressive, and it shows that his 12 step program is working. We're here for you, man.
he doesnt need to. his disciples have stepped up to take up the mantle. wow....still some delusional people round here....waaaa waaa, mean ol JVG ruined him. IF a player is so mentally weak that he quits after one tough experience, he wasnt cut out for this league....and I sure as hell dont want his wimpy butt on my team.
I remember in a interview, he said the reason why he couldn't show his potential was because JVG wanted to turn him into a catch and shoot player. That was just not his style or strength. Since we had Yao as our focal point, JVG wanted all 4 men around him to be able to just catch and shoot. Rafer had no problem with this strategy, which is why he was our starter under JVG. Vspan wanted to be more of a play maker such as penetration and pick and rolls but JVG would not have any of this.
And I remember in an interview after he got traded from mean ol' JVG he would have none of the NBA (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2934887) : Spanoulis said in a telephone interview with Houston television station KRIV from Greece that the trade didn't change his mind. "Nothing changes my mind. I still want to stay in Greece," he said. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...
What if we had got scola under jvg? He might have never played since scola isn't a great defender, instead scola might be back in europe and we might be stuck with hayes.
I think JVG would have played Scola if he had him because he's the hustle and energy type guy that JVG likes. However, if JVG remained the coach the point is moot because the Rockets would have never gotten Scola. During a game last year JVG made a comment about how he was shocked that Scola could play. He was saying how career non-NBA players could never play in the NBA and anyone like Scola should have never made the NBA. Then he made a comment about how the Argentine League must be good. Because of Manu and how they won the Olympics. He even said Scola must be good in the Argentine League. He didn't even know that Scola had played in Europe for like the previous 8 years. He then made some comment about he was impressed by Morey and Adelman saying how Morey found a talent no one knew about (totally untrue as NBA teams wanted Scola for years) and then how Adelman impressed him for giving a "player no one ever heard of a shot". Again Scola was very well known. Also JVG said that unlike Adelman he would have never agreed to it. He said if Morey told him I am getting Luis Scola from the Argentine League (again not even the league he was from) that JVG would have said no way and if you do I won't play that scrub. He then said something like props to Adelman for being smarter than I am.
