I was just coming on here to talk about that. I hate hearing all this crap about how it refers to Bush and politics today. I wasn't even thinking about that during the movie, luckily i didn't because it probably would have ruined the movie. Movies are for entertainment, I don't get all this talk about political stuff in it, who cares? It's just a movie.
I don't really mind it but I don't enjoy it being shouted at me, some of the scenes in the flick did that, totally took me out of the movie.
I really don't think it was aimed that much at the Bush administration, there were a few things but they seemed pretty minor to me. It did seem like there were a lot of parallels between the government in V for Vendetta and the government in 1984.
It's a political story. When it was written, it was based on what the writer thought was brewing in England under Margret Thatcher. Plus, the stuff that reminded you of Abu Ghraib was already there in the book.
yeah i'm not quite sure either, but he was always wearing gloves and his face was always in the shadows and i'm sure he could've worn other stuff over his face as it suited his purposes, so he could probably pull it off (plus she doesn't actually know what he looks like).
Exactly. Complaining that V for Vendetta is political is like complaining that Field of Dreams is about baseball.
I'm late to the party, just saw the film last night. Thought it was good, enjoyed it. Just a tad disappointed, but that is to be expected when I had just read that the Wachowzski (sp..sorry) Brothers wanted the film to LITERALLY start a revolution. Not much can live up to that. POSSIBLE SPOILERS DEFINITE RANT Hope this doesn't have to get moved to Debate & Debacle (or whatever) but it is difficult to speak of this film in a vacuum when it has politico spilled all over it. Couple things I found interesting: At a couple points in the film I begin to think, "Well that's not really the answer now is it?" "After this mess is destroyed...then what?" "We'd all love to see the plan." and most disturbing( to me) I thought : "Well this is just irresponsible film making. I see why they didn't release it last year, right after the tube bombings. Some nut, some f*ckd up, confused teen or somebody is going to see this and try to do/start something stupid. That is too DANGEROUS!!!" Then I realized: The bastards got me! The Man, Big Brother, The System, Blair, W, The Gov'ment, whatever you want to call them... GOT ME! They changed the way I think. I'm worrying about a film, Art, a piece of fictional video! I've bought into the fear without even realizing it. If they can change the focus, keep our balls in ice and your heart in fear, You will not think about the REAL struggles and issues and you will be much more likely to accept censorship and follow the herd. I was reminded of Columbine and how people and even the purveyors blamed the Matrix to some extent right? Well we can't keep the films, the music, the games and books from the youth...even if they are sick. We need to deal with the sickness of the children. I realized I have this fear, that I feel I can justify (9/11, terrorism, war, the man, death and the uncontrollable)) that I wasn't even aware of. V may need to lock me in the feckin' dungeon! Are we so wrapped up in daily fear that we question art? Many past generations, including our fore-fathers and mother's mother's mothers had to burn it down, topple it and banish the bastards when necessary. Two things from the film I loved: 1) V telling Evey it was up to the next generation to decide what would happen after/if/when the lever is pulled. 2) The idea that when soldiers are given a choice and not given orders, they are not numbers, but humans. I found both of these to be a kind of prayer for peace.....though it's only a feeling, it's only a film. Thanks for your time, life is short. Have a good day. England prevails? C Son
That caused you to drop your suspension of disbelieve? Things in the movie that 100% could never happpen: V taking over the airwaves and getting away scott free The closed tube line going directly under Parliment not being guarded The soldiers not unloading their clips on the approaching mob The approaching mob The approaching mob all wearing the V mask etc. Think literary devices. Think metaphor.
All these, you can still say there is a possibility. They think tube is out of function, even if the there is guard, they won't be able to stop the tain. Soldiers can't fire because they lost commendo, the general dude was waiting for orders. etc. the only question there is how V have the capacity to make those masks. Then again, he could. It's not unimaginable that people don't want to reveal identity in such demonstrations, and they have mask at hand. The torture story is a vital part of the story, full of emotional tensions, a bigger part in plot than all the above. The only way V can pull that off is: wear a different mask, although a bit wierd; use a voice changing devise. Even then it would be near impossible.
Just got back from a screening. I really enjoyed it!!! Hugo Weaving was great, and overall the movie was done very well. I would give it a 9 out 10 stars.
I find it hard to be impressed with someone's acting performance when they wear a mask the whole time. For all I know he could have had a body double throughout the movie, and only did the voice. I thought the movie was good and entertaining, but nothing spectacular. For some reason a bald Natalie Portman turned me on.
They have it on IMAX in Edwards? If so, I must go and see it there... P.S.: which Edwards? The Greenway Plaza one or the one by I-10 and Silber?
The Bush references made me go "ugh" a few times. But overall, one of the top movies on my all-time list. It was badass great. From what I've read elsewhere, for those of you wondering how he made all those masks...I've read that he made them in the 20 years he was underground. And btw, I'm gonna start making those eggys-in-a-basket. Let's see what that tastes like.
