rm95, close. what I was going to say was, "were you happier with mackovic? with mcwilliams? anyone?" [darrell royal doesn't count]. as far as I'm concerned, these are the players I want any coach to get. mack may not be God's gift to strategery, but. . . the players are a start. I don't think he's as bad strategically as people make him out to be. I'd say he's no worse than average as a coach. that may be disputed, and I definitely have been guilty of looking through burnt orange-colored glasses before [see: simms v. applewhite]. but regardless, these are the players any 'Horns fan should want. and I guess I am curious. . . does anyone think things are worse now than before Mack?
I do think we are better off now. It took me awhile to admit that because I really didn't think that Mackovic should've been fired in the first place. His 4-7 year included injuries to 4 main players, and it came on the heels of (gasp) a conference championship. However, now I admit that we made a move in the right direction, I'm just not sure that Mack Brown will be the guy to lead UT to a conference championship, much less a national championship. Look at two guys who came into the conference after him, Stoops and Barnett. One has a national championship and one has a conference championship, both with much less talent. R.C. Slocum has even won a conference championship for chrissakes. Even Frank Solich (who's been with NU for awhile) has won a conference championship and is playing for a national one, and he became head coach the same year. I'm rooting like hell for him to prove me wrong, but until he does it, no one can convince me with their amazing arguments ("we will win...trust me")
I didn't think we could ever lose to Colorado. I'm happy Texas fans booed Mack's poor decisions, and they will continue to boo Mack - with or without alcohol. Mack will always do enough to keep his job. As long as he brings in top 10 classes, sells out the stadium, wins 8-10 game a year, and continues to be a great p.r. guy, I can't see him getting canned. He will not be judged by the number of conference and/or national titles and that is sad. People keep saying give him more time, and hopefully one day talent will override coaching. I thought Dec. 1 would be the start.
thats not true smokey, I'm a UT student and I'm very pissed off about dec 1, but the question who is out there that is a complete coach/recruiter and would drop their current job for UT even though we're very highly thought of.
RM95, 'we will win..trust me'? What, 3 or 4 seasons of 9 wins or more isn't 'winning' enough?! Just relax and count your blessings (Trust me, I'm a long-suffering, but patient and optimistic UH grad and fan): 1. UT should be pre-season #1 next year 2. Another mind-boggling recruiting class 3. Your 'Golden Boy' QB comes back with something to prove 4. Benson, Johnson, Thomas, Williams (all future 1st rounders) will be a year older 5. Find a couple of LBs, and the defense will be as good or better
Well I think the guy from Stanford, Tyrone Willingham (sp?), would be a steal. I think Willingham would do just a good job as Mack selling the program to recruits and alums. He is very highly thought of among the coaching ranks. And he has big wins on his resume that Mack does not have.
i could believe that, im just saying there aren't many of them out there, but it is put up or shut up with mack soon. I WANT MY RING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Live, IMO a lot of the frustration you hear and read about from UT fans is based upon what other schools in our conference are doing. Sure 9 wins a year (98-00) and 10 wins (01) is impressive and many schools would love to be in UT's position. UT fans appreciate what Mack has done, but in the same time OU has a conference and national title (00), A&M has a conference title (98), and NU has a conference title (99). Barnett, a guy Texas passed on, has struggled at CU but was able to get the big one before Mack. I, for one, would trade in those wins for a national title. Mack will have a chance to prove himself as a coach in 2002 when UT plays @ North Carolina, @ Kansas State, @ Nebraska, @ Texas Tech, and Oklahoma.
