Not sure the freshman class will have a huge impact this fall since not too many positions are up for grabs. I expect Kindle to be in the mix at backup OLB, simply because he's too talented to keep off the field. Ditto Eddie Jones, who might get some reps behind Crowder. Also, possibly Jared Norton and Dustin Earnest will get some early looks at LB. Deon Beasley might be moved to WR if we sign one of the California blue chip DBs. Aside from that, I expect Webb, McGee, and the WR recruits to mostly redshirt next year. Our WR depth is stacked right now, which is why Taylor will stay at TB. Also, the coaches do like his versatility to be able to go in motion and line up wide on certain plays.
Chykie Brown might not qualify academically, which is why we're looking at the two kids from Cali, Mouton and Ross.
Do you think RT will get the nod at TB this season? I do agree that his ability to line up wide will be big next season. But I just don't think he has the bulk to be the workhorse at RB. I thought Charles showed that he will be the next great back for UT. I'm really excited about this kid, I think he will end up being better than Cedric. He's got the size, the speed, the moves, and he can pick up the blitz. I would like to see Mack committ to a RB next season instead of switching starters, but that doesn't mean RT can't switch in. What about Melton? This kid showed up early but seemed to regress a bit throughout the season. He's perfect for short yardage situations, but I think he's capable of a little more than that.
It's irrelevant who actually starts because it's going to be a RB by committee deal. Last year, Selvin and Jammal were injured through parts of the season. All three guys will share time in the backfield. Also, with Ahmard Hall leaving, Henry Melton will be groomed to play FB I think.
That's an interesting point. Some of my friends think he would make a better DE. But i was leaning towards fullback. Kindle will defenitley get every oppotunity to start. Dosn't hurt that he's already enrolled for spring. Mcgee, if its true that we'll a RB by commitiee might be able to get some reps if RT moves to wideout. We got some good OL to replace Scott and Allen. So unless Webb puts on some more weight and blows everyone away in the summer I think he'll redshirt. PS is Blaylock going to move to gaurd or stay at RT????
Slim down some? I think he's perfect size at FB, must learn how to block for sure. I was very intrigued when I learned Melton was recruited as a DE/RB. I mean, if he has the speed to play RB, he certainly has the speed to play DE. But I didn't like how he kind of shyed away from contact during runs. I would love to see this kid lower his shoulder and see who can take down 300+ lbs. Plus with Robison, Crowder, and a 5-star recruit in Jones, I don't see a lot of PT becoming available.
Henry Melton could be all-world at DE with his combination of size, speed, and footwork. If he could get excited about playing defense, we're talking about a guy that can dominate the position.
Cohen - No worries, I saw most the fireworks - some people I was with needed to do their hair before dinner. It also helped having an aisle seat and a parking spot near the music school. Here's a little "inside" recruiting tidbit. I hung out with Roy Miller and a couple of 2007 recruits from Killeen (his hometown). One was a cornerback named Eric, who was kinda small (5-9 may be pushing it) but looked fast. The other was Brandon Joiner - a DE who is going to be converted to outside linebacker. Joiner was the defensive MVP of the Army All-American combine camp. http://usarmy.scout.com/2/486947.html That site compares him to Eddie Jones, so it seems like he may be a 5-star, #1 at his position recruit type. They were both completely pumped about UT.
^ SI had an interview w/ Mack and asked how this NC will change the recruiting process. Basically, Mack said you won't see any changes this season since they're basically at full capacity (with the #1 class in my opinion). But he said the big changes will come next season. He said Texas received a bunch of calls right after that game with big name recruits wanting to committ right away. Any word on where Joiner will sign?
Where or when? The guy flat out LOVED UT, and Roy Miller is a living legend in Killeen. Joiner was joking around and goes, "Yeah, I made a sack and R-Mill's name showed up on the screen." I thought they were joking around, but I found it pretty funny when Roy Miller's name came up in that scout.com report I posted when they were talking about Joiner. He was at the NC celebration, and thought it was awesome. I'm sure he'll have a great time on any other recruiting visits he takes (He was also floored by UT women ) Obviously, I don't have a ton of experience hanging around recruits, but these guys were asking how old girls were to make sure they'd still be here when they got here. This recruiting cycle ends in February, right? I wouldn't be surprised if Joiner signs right away in March to kick off the big names in the 2007 class...
Cool Baqui99, thanks for the heads up. 'The hottest news going as far as Texas is concerned is a renewed interest in Klein Collins speedster Michael Goodson. I thought he was the best RB on the West squad at the All-American Bowl. Goodson could visit Texas this weekend. A Big 12 source I consider very reliable told me this morning that he thinks Goodson will end up at UT. We'll see. Interesting. Not sure how much we need him now w/ Charles, Taylor, and now w/ V. McGee coming in. Also, I don't really like the way this kid has started off the signing process. According to some sources, he went to OKSt. trying to recruit players out of there and supposedly had trouble with Gundy right from the start, he ended up leaving after a very short while. There was also something about Goodson asking Gundy for money or something (not sure if true since its extremely illegal). Sounds very Perilloserish to me.
