Article from yesterday, more mundane **** After reading the story, read the comments. If only the GARM on this site had the kind of posts and passion that they do.
That's possible - but so far, he's shown no ability to beat spread teams. His losses in the SEC have all been for that reason, and the SEC as a whole struggles with it (see A&M and Mizzou's success, and Auburn with Cam and this year). I think if you're paying him $10MM, you're paying him to do what he knows, rather than hoping he can figure something else out. For example, you don't hire Art Briles thinking he's smart and expecting him to figure out how to run an triple option offense - you hire him to do what he does at Baylor. If you need Saban to build a new defensive scheme for a different league, then you're not really getting the Alabama version of Saban that you're paying for. Agreed. I hope the extension is official soon to end this once and for all.
They aren't looking anything. No one knows. They are just all looking for exposure by breaking a story that they have a %50 chance about being right about. BTW, do you have your baylor green on today? Hoping maybe Jeffcoat gets hurt so we lose and Mack gets fired? I understand wanting a pro team to lose because of draft picks but wishing for our alma matter to get destroyed because you don't like the coach is sad. Again, please go to the game and root for Baylor. I'm sure all the other longhorn fans will understand and give you words of encouragement. EDIT: We aren't even talking about just a game. We are talking about either a share or a whole conference championship and a possible trip to a BCS game. You said that you are a student now though so you obviously don't know what that means.
From the names I've heard (and many of these are off the wall), I think the following would be interesting: Briles/Malzahn - innovative coaches, haven't reached the pinnacle (thus motivated). Still have something to prove. Malzahn has less of a track record, but is younger and could be a guy that's around a long time. Shaw - Proving he can win with lesser talent and that it wasn't all about Andrew Luck; love that he (or his DC) has figured out how to shut down Oregon. That's a skill that would be really useful in the B12. Would love to see what he can do with A-level talent. John Harbaugh - recent rumors cropped up about him being burnt out on the NFL and wanting to look at college. He could be a great Pete Carroll face-of-the-program type. I have my doubts that those rumors are true though. Jon Gruden - unlikely that he's interested in college, but I think he'd be a pretty fascinating choice. Lots of entertainment value and energy, if nothing else. The consistent thing about all of these guys is that none have reached the pinnacle of college football, so whatever they achieve here would be the peak of their career. I feel like the program needs that kind of enthusiasm and life to it. With a guy like Saban, we're just trying to buy a title, and it's been-there, done-that for him. I know that's not 2-3 people, but I'd be pretty happy with any of the above.
If the choice is between winning today and keeping Mack or losing and Mack leaving, I would take the loss. This program has fundamental problems that will just repeat year in and year out until it's burned to the ground and rebuilt. The sooner, the better. If this was last year's Big 12, this team would be 6-6 at best. The program is going in the wrong direction. It's just like the Texans - we could see the problems with Kubiak and Schaub for the last few years, but they get masked by doing just enough to stay on the same path. But an implosion was inevitable. If you wait until it happens, it's much harder to rebuild it.
I have no idea - but I kind of like the unknown (part of why I don't like the idea of Saban). I'd like to find out what he can do and what he could build - he has so much energy and seems to connect with the kids so well in his ESPN QB-film breakdowns and all that stuff. Obviously it could be fake, but he seems to legitimately enjoy interacting with the potential draft picks and all that. He also seems to be the type of guy that wouldn't need to rely on just out-talenting his competition. I'd like to believe he could out-smart them too (that's the theme of all the coaches I hope we get). I like rooting for teams where the sum is greater than the parts, which I feel is the opposite of Mack's teams where the sum is often less than all the fantastically recruited talent would suggest.
That's not the choice. If the regents want to replace Mack then they will. They will do whatever they want. The fans will sure not come to Mack's defense no matter what.
There is no way Case McCoy is the best quarterback at Texas. Help me out, Texas fans. There's no way, is there?
