Hmm... I wonder if he was their OC, or QB's coach.

Looked him up. Head coach. Supposedly, they can move the ball. 11-0 this year, 33-3 overall.

Reese came with Mack too. Plus, the alums don't hate him - I don't think he's going anywhere soon.

    c) Have you seen OU's offense? Mike is not likely to be better than big brother in that area.

the one ranked in the top 3 in the Big 12?

I am not sure how they would pull that off. Unless some one leaves or is let go, its not going to happen. NCAA rules put a limit on the number of asst coaches a team can have. That is the reason you see so many asst coaches wearing multiple hats.

Until Mack gets a competent OC (rid of GD) he will continue to have to defend himself and the staff.

Real quick on that one mduke.

    1) They are 3rd in points. Points includes when you get a turnover and drive 30 yards and score.
    2) This is one of the worst years ever for offenses in the Big XII
    3) here is how they really stack up in the Conf:

*5th in rushing yds *9th in passing yds *9th in total yds

Saying they rank 3rd in offense does not compute.

I disagree about Carl Reese. I think he's fantastic.

You guys forget how atrocious the defense was before he got here. They seriously had a matadore like defense. Their wasn't even much talent there. Reese has turned it into a perenially top defense. If there is a problem, it's the D-line. For some reason, we never get as many sacks as we should. But, still, coverage is usually excellent and we usually don't give up many big plays. Lots of interceptions.

Injuries hurt badly against Tech. Vasher, the best corner, was playing hobbled against a great offense. Kalen Thornton and Tubbs were hurt. DJ played little more than half the game. Take 4 starters off any defense, and see how they do. Toward the end, UT lost yet another starter in the secondary. Sure, we have depth... but you don't want to throw inexperienced players in against that offense.

You can't really stop a great offense... no matter how good your D is. IMO, that's why the best college teams almost always focus on offense. Florida St., Florida, ND in the Lou Holtz era, etc... all focused on having fantastic offenses. They had some good defensive talent, but the best players were almost always on offense. Look, even, at the mid-major teams that dominate their conferences. BYU, Hawaii, Marshall, etc... they're scoring machines, generally.

Nebraska's probably the only real "defensive dynasty" that I can remember... and they were at their prime in the big 12, a conference that had an emphasis on running and defense. Notably, their fall from greatness has occurred since UT, OU, and Tech have all switched to more aerial games.

Defense can win you some games, no doubt about it. But when there's a QB like Kingsbury who's clicking... you have to score. The defense, very obviously, played poorly against Tech.

But what if Redding had recovered that fumble? What if the idiots hadn't had successive penalties on a 4th and 10? What is Huff had hung on to that INT? Then, you can most likely take 2 TD's off the board, and the defense does its job (if narrowly). The defense had a bad game... but it was closer than you think to putting UT in a position to win.

Hell, if we'd just had one of those breaks... UT wins the game (without even mentioning the BJ drop or the holding call-back). People are freaking out too much about this game. Yeha, it sucked... but a whole lot of things went wrong, and UT still could have won it in the last few minutes.

I assume Texas probably has the maximum # of coaches? They didn't last year, when they added McWhorter, so they may still be under the limit, hopefully.
Texas has two OL coaches. One of them would have to go.

McWhorther was really brought in more for the tight ends but has also took on the tackles, then there was the rash of injuries at tight end so he is possibly safe.

A possible move would be to make McWhorther the coach of the entire O line and fill another coaching spot with the place vacated by Nunez. I would venture to say that niether should feel secure in their position, but knowing Brown, NO ONE will be gone until some of the boosters start to raise a little more hell.

What's the definition of insanity again?

I honestly think Mack thinks he's gonna get lucky one year with this coaching staff and win it all. But, I think the coaching staff is responsible for one loss a year, right now. Mack is a sharp guy, but if he relies on "luck" and self-construed "destiny" then he should go. You make your breaks, like it or not.

Stoops would have canned a sub par coordinator years ago. Speaking of assistant coaches, I think young coaches who want to be head coaches someday, make the best assistant coaches.

Nunez should go ahead of McWhorter.

Wow, Valdosta State is good, I go to the University of Central Arkansas, which is in the same conference as Valdosta State. We were ranked really high when we played them, and it was supposed to be a close game for the conference title, but Valdosta ended up shutting us down and winning 33-10, it wasn't ever in doubt.

BTW, I think somewhere I heard that Mike Leach from Tech used to coach at Valdosta as well.

There will be a change or two in the assistant coaching ranks, but do not expect it to be a big name assistant leaving. Nunez is likely to be the sacrificial lamb as the O line has been pathetic this year, but BY NO MEANS should it stop there.

GD decides to "simplify things" for the biggest games, that makes sense!! He has done less with more than any coord in the last 5 years.

GD is an idiot, and there is no shortage of alum that would be more than willing to write a letter of recommendation for him. I only hope some one (SOON) would offer him a head coaching job, but it will never happen within this state as his name is mud here, and outside the state, no one knows who the hell he is.

Baylor or Wyoming have been rumored. If true, would he leave?

Greg's playbook is rumored to be as thick as the Houston phone book. I think he should simplify it. I liked that he added the shotgun. We seemed to be the only team he wouldn't use it. More formations, fewer plays.

Baylor will not look at him. They want to compete in the conf, how will they have any credibility if they take on a OC who is a reject. The distain and all the negative talk about GD will prevent him from getting a job in the state of Texas. His name is tarnished.

I do not think so unless he was given ungodly money or was forced out. He has job security rivaled only by that of a postal worker.

It is huge. I have seen it pages and pages of:
5 yd out left 5 yd out right
6 yd hook left 6 yd hook right
10 yd post left 10 yd post right
    slant left slant right
off tackle left off tackle right

    and so on.

Here's another way to look at it: Farentz, Richt, Tressel, and Friedgen all may do in 2 years what Mack hasn't done in 5: Go to a BCS bowl and/or win their conference.

Thank you. Just as I was starting to get over the depression from Saturday, you have to give me that stat. You are gr8!

The funny thing is that mack has done so much to help turn the program around that people (mysef included) are somewhat ok with what is going on and in many cases defend the guy.

What he needs to do is listen to what a guy who I hate says about what it takes to be a great coach. He said (paraphrasing here) "I am not a great coach. I am a great administrator. I surround myself with great coaches."

It makes a lot of sense. How often do you see coaches in football (college or pro) who do not have great assistants or ones who's assistants are coveted?

Haven, what if the D didn't allow 6 td passes? I just think the better field won on that day.

the horns, who said that? stoops?

TheHorns, personally, a loss to tech is not far fetched and it should never be. Things like this tend to happen at least once a year. Sure, UT has more talent, but any given Saturday. What frustrates me is the 3 OU losses and the fact that Mack has ridiculous excuses for them. I get the feeling Mack is saying to the fans "fock off." I almost think he treats OU as another game. I guarantee the OU players/coaches don't see it that way. And, it's the way they lose as well.

I don't expect them to win the MNC every year, but I want them to be in contention for it.

The excuse he used about the wind in Dallas, give me a break. I don't know if mduke posted this here, but I heard it from a Sooner. You remember when Stoops' first OU team went 7-5? The media asked whether the fact that the OU offense either scored too quickly or had too many quick 3 and outs to where it wore down the OU defense e.g. keep them on the field too long. Instead of using that as an excuse, Stoops said, with a dead panned look on his face, "the defense can get off the field if they're tired. " Nothing else. When somone asked why he lost to ATM he said"we got out played and out coached."

I don't advocate firing Mack. But, if he doesn't make the changes, he needs to realize that the alumni won't settle for "5 straight 9 win seasons." Those were impressive when there were only 10 games in a season.
