That is so unfair with the talent he has in Wash. Maybe he isn't a fantastic recruiter, but its not like a school like UT needs fantastic recruiting to acquire talent.
That is so unfair with the talent he has in Wash. I could be wrong, but I don't think he's consistently won anywhere he's been. Colorado was up-and-down in the 90's. Washington was in the Rose Bowl two years ago, went down last year, and further down this year (if I remember right). I think he's a coach who built a reputation on a few good seasons and some intentional NCAA violations.
I don't know, but would you guys rather have Barnett's last 5 years or Mack's last 5 years? Keep in mind, Barnett would have had an easier time recruiting for Texas than CU.
a) Mike Stoops hates Texas as much as Bob. He makes more smartass comments about Texas than does Bobby. as a matter of fact, just after the Texas game he made the remarks about "that Texas freshman QB... the McNeal kid" (making an intentional mistake) as a backhanded comment about Texas. Funny how the McNeal kid beat him though. b) Are you sold on Mike's defensive abilities? He was torched by RC. c) Have you seen OU's offense? Mike is not likely to be better than big brother in that area. Barnett gets out coaches so much by lesser teams with lesser talent, he would not last one season with Texas.
thehorns, Stoops said that before the OU/UT game. One thing about UT, when they lose, they seem to look worse then any other team doing it. I should have worried more aboutthe Tech game after watching Baylor stuff our running game.
So if he did them intentionally to get attention, he probably won't have any further trouble with the NCAA.
So if he did them intentionally to get attention, he probably won't have any further trouble with the NCAA. He didn't violate rules intentionally to gain attention - he did them because he could care less about NCAA rules and screwing the schools that he works for and needs to get every advantage he can when recruiting. He was barred from speaking face to face with a recruit due to visit limitations, so he went to the guy's house, called him from his car, asked the recruit to come look out the front window and talked to him on the phone while looking at him from his car. Then he claimed he didn't mean to go around any rules - as though this is some kind of normal thing to do. The guy is a moron.
The main reason why I like him is because he seems to do pretty well with quarterbacks. And VY is the way UT wins a National Championship in my opinion. So I want a coach that will foster his talent, not let it go to waste in Mack's ****ty system. Thats all I'm saying.
Neuheisel is a lot like Mack. A great recruiter and salesman whose teams often make boneheaded plays and every year consistently manage to lose a game or two they have no business losing to based on the talent difference. Just as an example, I'll talk about 3 plays by these coaches/coaching staffs that typify their sloppiness. 1st game of the season, with the game in hand, Washington has 12 men on the field AFTER A TIME OUT--to give Michigan a chance to win (the kick was good, Wash lost). Against OU, 4th and about 3, late 2nd half, obvious situation where OU is just trying to get Texas D to jump offsides, also AFTER A TIME OUT,--what do they do--Texas jumps offsides. Result, OU gets a TD and 2 point conversion out of the drive to put it within 3 or 4 by the end of the half, followed by Mack not trying a Hail Mary for some unknown reason even to Stoops-- the events totally changed the momentum of that game. Finally against Tech. UT up 21-14 and ready to get the ball back--special teams I think first have a illegal substitution, and then on 4th down there is an offsides or other senseless defensive penalty (a play UT busted up). What is the result? These two consecutive senseless bonehead penalties allows Tech to tie it 21-21 at the half instead of a 21-14 or 28-14 UT lead. The game is now on, UT loses. In sum, no thanks on Neuheisel too much like Mack. One another issue. Carl Reese is not one of Mack's original guys right, he is a holdover, right? If so I personally think he should be canned. For all the talk about Greg Davis sucking, I think Reese has been a bigger part of the L's over the last 24 months. *Oregon 2 years ago--Reese's defense was consistently burned by trick plays and play action--few adjustments in the 2nd half. *OU last year (Ok, not his fault) *CU last year--took him 3 quarters to realize Daniel Graham was "good" and to stop putting a slow linebacker on him. Duh. Also came in with bad game plan. Oregon (with far less defensive talent) totally showed if you bottle up CU's running game between the tackles and covered Graham the rest of the offense was hapless. *Washington last year (Ok a victory, but had little to do with the defense)--took him 3 quarters to realize you focus on Stevens and then Williams in that offense. *OU this year--consistently burned between the tackles with little adjustment. Left Boyd out there when he is totally useless against skill players quicker than a box turtle. Totally killed by 2nd half adjustments w/o his own re-adjustments. *TTech this year. Worst defensive display by a Texas' team since Rout 66. Flat embarrassing. Did Reese not watch how Iowa State and CU--two defense no where near as good as UT's, shut down that offense? Ever heard of moving Redding around, ever heard of a stunts, ever head of zone blitzes--anything to make the other teams OL have difficult reads? Should have been prepared to play this game with 6 dbs, 1 traditional LB (Johnson) and 4 people on the front (be it DE, DT or LBs playing there). And finally, left Boyd out there when he is totally useless against skill players quicker than a box turtle. Finally, there is a general pattern here. Texas defense has generally been outstanding week in and week out, but every so often another teams comes in extra prepared (bye weeks, bowls, conference championships, or like Tech last week, over OU every time, where the game has been circled and coaches planning for a couple of weeks) and Texas’s defense is predictable, has no wrinkles, and the offense dictates the pace with no adjustments or adjustments way too late.
Dude, you are trying to go up a creek, without a paddle... Neuheisal is a great recruiter. He's young, and energetic, which appeals to a lot of good players. The problem is that the guys he recruits don't live up to the hype ie. Paul Arnold. Moreover, Neuheisal generally abandons the running game, as he is a pass-first, pass-second, guy. I would be more inclined to think positively of Neuheisal, if he weren't at the top of the NCAA's watch list.
Like the offense, UT's defense does well against the Baylors of the world, and fails to show up in big games.
1. Fire Greg Davis. 2. Fire whoever the hell the O-line coach is. Mack should stay, as should Carl Reese.
Based on what? He's just a defensive version of Greg Davis IMO. Hell, UT's offense has done pretty well all in all, since the OU game.
Honestly the defense has lapsed more in big games we lost over the last two years than the offense. Offense can come and go with hot or not so hot QB, but defense should be more or less consistent. Personally I send both Davis and Reese packing--but isn't Davis an ole Mack buddy. It seems to me the problem with both is predictableness. Often times the talent gap is so huge UT wins even being predictable, but you get a team close in talent (OU) or a substantially lesser talented team (about any other team to beat them over the last 2 years) who has planned well and is on--and if you can't adjust and thrown some new wrinkles your talent gap might not be enough to save you.
Reese gets another year and stays over GD for one reason, he has devloped the talent provided to him. You look at the top recruits on the defensive side, and most of them live up to the potential. On offense, well let's use the most recent ones: When I look at things as a whole, I see a pattern developing. Year in and year out, top talent is handed to GD and where does it go? Simms- all world in HS but seemed to need to have his skills refined. He is a good QB, but I am certain, he will be better once he receives coaching. Roy- GREAT talent, came in and was terrific as a freshman, but seemed to plateau quite early. The sky is still the limit, but that based purely on his the potential and raw abilities. Some one can and will get more out of him. BJ- another exceptional talent, who as a freshman showed seemed to plateau earlier than one would expect. Obviously still has the ability, but is not being utilized correctly. Cedric- Expectations were really high as a freshman, and he lived up to them. Came back this year and has been good, but we all feel he is better than the results we have seen. If it were one or two guys, you would start to think that it’s the kids who are the problem, but when you see it over and over on one side of the ball, it makes you think twice. We will all one day see what each of them can do once they have some coaching with people who develop players and maximize talent. Reese has a much better track record, GD's at the end of his leash.
what is it with Longhorn skill players plateauing at 19 years-old. Strange. Simms has improved alot though.
Anyone know anything about Chris Hatcher from Valdosta State? Supposedly he is gonna be the QB coach next year.
