Rice was 17 last year as well. But if you look at the list, it's the best school in south.

I'm going to UChicago next year (entering freshman). On last year's rankings they were listed at 15, but they jumped up 6 spots on this year's list. Let's see how that affects the number of applicants for the class of 2011. It's actually pretty funny how, even though the U of C hasn't changed significantly in terms of just about anything over the past year, they're ranking changed so much. I have been considering trying to transfer back home to Rice, but I'm not sure if I should yet. Chicago is a better school academically, but it's so far away. Can any current/former Owls here offer any advice?

We are the CIT's so pitious
The kids are brats, the food is hideous
we're gonna smoke and drink and fool around
    we're nookie bound
    we're worthless CIT's!

Are you kidding? U of C is an amazing school that will give you the inside track into some of the best grad schools in the country. Have fun in Chicago. You've got the rest of your life to live in Houston.

I'm beginning to think that college truely is wasted on the young.

thatboyz... I think most consider Duke to be in the South and thus the highest ranked school in the South, but there aren't that many in the South ranked highly....

That was a big jump by Chicago... and Duke didn't do as well as in past years (8th this year).

My school (Vanderbilt) stayed the same at 18, except it is tied with Emory instead of Notre Dame now.

thatboyz.. when you say "next year" do you mean this year... or have you already gotten into Chicago a year in advance? Congrats

Sorry, that didn't come out right. I graduated from high school this past May, and I received admission into Chicago. School starts September 26th; I meant next year as in next "school year"

Well, I'm not sure how many people really know about the U of C. Most people that hear that I'm going to U of C wonder why I'm traveling so far to attend a public university

And regarding grad schools, there's also sort of a problem there. A lot of the top-ranked schools like Harvard have high grade-inflation, whereas at Chicago there is next to none. Although I agree with U of C's no-nonsense grading system and their emphasis on a quality education, it still means I may have a lower GPA than a lot of my competition. I'm not sure how U of C compares to Rice in that sense?

I had that problem at Cornell, but I still got into a good grad school. Don't sweat it: Grad schools weigh GPAs differently depending on where you went.

Rice does not have grade inflation like Harvard's, but it's probably higher than Chicago's.

Since they're comparable schools academically, consider the other factors.
    1. Houston weather (60 degrees in November, only need a jacket for like a month) vs Chicago weather (hell).
    2. Southern girls (not necessarily the Rice girls ;) ) vs. Midwestern girls.
    3. Thanks to the light rail and it's location, Rockets games are incredibly accessable at Rice, which is a bonus.

That's my two cents. If the slightly higher prestige of Chicago (which is debatable anyway) outweighs all the other factors for you, then that is the right choice for you. From what I have seen, Rice graduates have no problem getting into the top flight grad programs.

I go to school in the Midwest and I've heard the same sort of comments when I told them I was going to school there. The South is generally uneducated when it comes to their knowledge of schools other than UT, A&M, and Rice.(other than Harvard and Stanford)

My alma mater (Emory) is pretty well known in some areas of the South.

Only one spot behind Rice. And hopefully on the rise. ;)
