I look at this as his pretense to skip the preseason.

He's made clear that he's only willing to show up for the real games, and has even hinted that a Clemens-style part time season (say, joining up at week 5 or 6) is what he'd prefer.

He wants to play, but is no longer willing to accept the grind.

    My take is this:

If this rumor turns out to be false, then I won't care.

If, however, this rumor turns out to be TRUE....then I still won't care.

He retires and comes back like every other day. I'll believe it when I see it.

    This, absolutely.

I don't think he is into training camp and preseason games. He wants to play when it counts if he has to put wear and tear on his body. Really, he has so much experience he only needs a few weeks to get back into form.

    I honestly think he's retiring...that he's done. We'll see.

I would hate to see him sit out the first several weeks, then try to come back as the team's savior. I don't think that's fair to anyone. Clemens may have done that in baseball, but this is a much more team-oriented sport. Plus, you only have 16 games in a season...not much margin for error. I guess if Jackson or Sage suck bad enough, and the team manages to win despite them, maybe that gives you reason enough to come back. But to want to come back after one of them does a decent if unspectacular job at qb, I'd imagine that could create some bad blood in the locker room.

I'd also hate to see him go if this is truly it...his off season flip-flopping aside, he was one of the best qbs in the league last season.

Maybe they shoulda talked to Brett first before spending all day on ESPN reporting the end of his career told second- and third-hand.

He says today, "if my ankle is healthy, I will play."

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp10/news/story?id=5436231

Brett Favre told ESPN's Ed Werder that he has not made any decision about returning for the 2010 season and says he will play if healthy.

Favre denied that he has sent text messages to any Vikings personnel saying he is retiring.

Asked if money a factor, Favre said this is not about money.

According to multiple reports, Favre informed the Vikings he would not return to Minnesota for a second season. Favre sent text messages to teammates saying, "This is it," league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

I'm on the side of Yahoo's Charles Robinson and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

    http://twitter.com/YahooSportsNFL

Multiple players aren't lying about the texts from Favre saying he was done. It's just a part of his dirty game. He wanted leverage to raise his contract, and he didn't want to go on the record saying he was retired (since it's clearly an act), so he found a loophole in which he could threaten the Vikings into upping his deal.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-...lion-to-play-this-year-star-tribune-says.html

The mistake wasn't running with the story - when you have confirmed info that a player is texting his teammates that he's retiring, you go with it. The only mistake was anyone who thought Favre's word had the slightest bit of credibility. He's the same self-absorbed prick he's always been, and as I've said for eight months, his ego is way too big to walk away from the NFL with his last pass being an interception that lost a championship game. He'll be back.

Whatever the outcome, Brett Favre wins.

He gets all the media attention he wants, gets all of his contract demands met, and somehow, the casual fan never remembers his consistent ability to completely and utterly blow up the team's entire season at the most important moment of the season. I think it's like 7 seasons now where he's thrown a pick at the critical moment in a playoff game to end the season.

As good as he is, and as many records as he has, he wasn't as good as he should have been.

I thought the Vikings should have won that game against the Saints, I wouldn't blame the game on Favre's interception, but it sticks in your head cause it was so dramatic.

    Adrian Petterson did fumble alot.

I think the NFL is the ultimate team sport. Dan Marino would have won a bunch of superbowls if the defense was good. etc. etc.

he's a drama queen, but he hasn't missed a game in forever. that's a record you have you to respect.

This is why we didn't get Bosh. Daryl Morey is busy wasting time keeping up with football instead of worrying about the NBA forefront. haha

I hope he does play. I don't think he can repeat that success from last season. I hope they knock his damn block off and he is forced to retire.
