Nice summary. Isner's friends seemed like real aholes. That changed me to pulling for Isner, to being even in who I was going for.
Damn! Baghdatis has been my favorite player for years, but I've been looking for a new one because he's seemed to have really fallen off after an injury. But he was playing well this tournament, and had a real chance to take it to five sets against Stan. Well that was exciting at least.
The schedule makers really need to rethink how they schedule the night matches on Ashe. Tonight, Djokovic rolled over Joao Sousa without breaking and sweat and Li Na did the same to Jelena Jankovic. Outside of the Hewitt/del Potro match the other night, all the night sessions have been like that. I understand that they want to put the big names on because those are the players that casual fans recognize, but these blowouts are not going to turn those casual fans into hardcore fans of the sport. I also realize that it's more difficult for them now because they don't have Andy Roddick. When he was playing, he was the obvious choice to put on Ashe at night. It also just so happened that he played in a lot of competitive matches during those night sessions. I'm not saying that you remove big names altogether, but maybe they should couple a match with a big name against a weaker opponent with a competitive match between two solid players. That way, you get a little bit of everything.
I am disappointed that Tommy Haas made so many unforced errors against Youzhny. Would have loved to see Haas vs. Hewitt.
I still can't believe that I feel this way, but I have become something of a Hewitt fan over the last couple of years. Back in '01 and '02 when he was at the top of the sport, I couldn't stand him. But to be fair, I was a (very) casual fan of the sport at that point and just didn't like him because he was brash and "won too much." For me in my early-teens, that's all it took. Over the last couple of years, as I have become a hardcore tennis fan, I've found myself rooting for him. I think it's largely just because I like to see players continue to compete and do well even when everyone is trying to push them out the door. He's had so many surgeries it's unreal. He has had so many plates and screws inserted that he's getting close to being more metal than flesh. His feet had gotten so bad that he had to have a couple of his toes fused together. And he continues to play pretty well considering his age and the circumstances.
I still don't like Hewitt, not only because he won too much early on, but complaining that James Blake got favorable calls because he was black and weak stuff like that made me hate him. I have grown to respect him. He's amazingly tough, and at his age and the surgeries he's had with some of his toes being fused together is amazing. I still don't like him though. But I do give him a lot of respect
