Yeah...I guess you didn't appreciate that joke. I just couldn't see myself saying: "He he.. I would love for Canada to lose again. That would make my day." Replace Canada with any other country, and I still don't see myself saying it. So, for enders, why?
It got old the second time I heard it. This was the 68,956th time. Yeah, it only works for the US. Here are some reasons: - The US basketball team is the clear favorite to the point where they are not only expected to win, they are expected to blow away every other team by 15+ points. So, there is some David & Goliath sentimentality that rises to the surface and makes me want the giant to be overthrown (again). *g* - The US Olympic machine is huge. They pour more money into their training programs and routinely produce more medal winners than any other country. This naturally makes me want to root for the underdog, regardless of event. - There is the perception throughout the world that Americans think they are better than everyone else. This, coupled with the large degree of constant ignorance/arrogance displayed toward my country ("Vancouver is down there next to Toronto, right?" "52nd state" etc..) makes the US an easy target for bad Olympic intentions. Really, really don't want a mud-slinging rumble to arise. You asked twice, though, so I thought I'd explain my reasoning.
I had heard 51st...didn't know how you would feel about 52nd. That's fine...It's just that the hate the US Olympics teams get is the type of hate you would expect to be reserved for Hitler-era Germany and Stalin-led Soviet.
