I've mentioned elsewhere that US naval forces, including a Marine amphibious assault group, which includes a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship (that carries Harrier jump jets similar to the ones used by Britain at the Falklands, as well has a lot of helicopters, including assault models - image below), were stopped in the Eastern Med while in route back to home port in the States because of the current crisis. I was speculating at the time that one reason could have been the crisis in Egypt, in case things blew up there due to Morsi's power grab and Americans needed to be evacuated from the country. Of course, there are many reasons to have them there, Syria being one of them, obviously. We also had several Arleigh Burke Class Aegis destroyers already in the area, which can attack mulitple targets on land and in the air (including ballistic missiles), as well as on and under the sea. These new forces, a carrier battle group, which would include at least one nuclear attack submarine carrying cruise missiles, vastly increase what was already a formidable force.

    So?

edit: Mathloom, I just bothered to read the first couple of pages. Have you lost your ****ing mind? With all due respect, of course. I'm tempted to say that you're babbling like a mental patient that hasn't been taking his meds, but that would be impolite. Where the hell did all this crap come from?

So what is the point of that last article?

I don't think the USA should help these guys. They want weapons and money, but really, they hate the USA and the West.

We are better off with Assad in power than with these idiot extremists. And so are the people in Syria.

The US needs that kind of fire power to handle the Syrians' 21st century tank brigades.

The West really doesn't get a boost either. Assad's an ally of Russia and Iran, but the country's too unstable to be of any value as an ally and will be an isolated humanitarian disaster at best (although given Syria's proximity to Israel and ethnic ties to neighboring countries, violence will no doubt spillover).

Best case pragmatic scenario? The Gulf states broker a peace agreement, Assad steps down, but the current government remains in tact.

No chance this will happen. The Gulf states have already condemned him and armed the FSA. More importantly, neither the FSA nor their extremist friends are going to sign a peace agreement. Assad will not let people who undertook military operations in his country as defected members of his army just roam around, he will want these guys executed and he will do so if he has the chance.

The reality is that without the US, Bashar has till March or April. If the FSA + Al Qaeda Iraq "liberate" Syria from Assad, it is a major PR problem for the US and Russia. However, a late swoop with a "this could not have been done without the US" banner could rectify that PR issue in the eyes of "Western" citizens. It could also land them a sweet platform from which they, along with their allies, can attack Iran more effectively.
