Ding......ding.....ding.....in this corner, weighing at a honestly unknown weight, the Canadian cannonball......Macbeth vs. the world traveled Sir Jackie Chiles for the D & D heavyweight title. Honestly guys, how did a pretty legit thread get this far off track?

I think the general should've kept his big trap shut because it really doesn't help us as far as the Muslims and that whole new edition of the Crusades issue (even though their constant invasions of Europe forced the Pope and the European crowned heads to reply). I may agree with him, but if I was a flag officer, I'd be damned if I let some snooping reporters catch me saying it.

the religion that was taught to the illiterate masses by the Pope during the Crusades was hardly the faith of Jesus Christ. blood baths in the Temple do not honor God. the crusades were an absolute abomination.

I won't disagree with you on that, even though I'm Catholic. But Europe did suffer several Muslim invasions and it wasn't until 1492 when the Muslims were finally and thankfully booted out of Europe.

in reading the accounts of the third crusade, i found the Muslim leader, Saladin to be far more Christ-like than King Richard.

Let me take a minute to explain what I think is happening here. I think this is actually a cultural miscommunication that is taking place. I'm serious here. I think SJC touched on it a few posts ago. After working for a while in Germany and being around a fair amount of Germans, I have noticed a healthy amount of constructive criticism by them intended (in their minds) to help others. This is not normal in the US/Canada, and it is frequently taken as an attack by Americans, when in all actuality it was meant to help. I've seen this happen time and time again in my personal dealings with both groups. I think SJC was just trying to help you, Macbeth, like he said.

    Carry on.

I'm actually glad you posted that Bigtexx because I honestly think Sir Jackie Chiles doesn't know why people call him so condescending, next time he criticizes me I will take it as constructive criticism and move on.

QUESTION: WHO HERE, who is religious, DOES NOT THINK THEIR GOD IS THE BEST AND CORRECT ONE?

I mean hell . . ISN'T THAT PART OF BEING IN A RELIGION?????
    Why is saying it wrong?

If you think your god is second rate or what have you . . . .
how strong can your faith be

We so caught up in . . .symbolism

In Actually 99.9% of all Christians beleive
'Allah' to be at best a false prophet
    at worse Satan's great deception

This general may push the envelope a bit
    but
    by and large .. . . . .I was under the impression
that if you put all your faith and beleif into something
it is with the beleif that it is correct and right.

We would rather he beleive this
but say .. he tolerates other religions and
that thy maybe right. . .. .when he does not beleive they are right
    at all

QUESTION TO THE CHRISTIANS HERE: Do You beleive in your heart that ALLAH is as good as or better than GOD?

The Stuff about GOD putting Bush in the white house
goes hand in hand with all the Christians that tells me.
"EVERYTHING HAPPENS BECAUSE GOD WANTS IT THAT WAY"
    etc . .. . . .

    Like I said,
He did not say something that most Christians don't beleive
in the privacy of their own thoughts, homes, Churches.

I can't argue with that, RR. I believe Jesus Christ to be the revelation of the one, true God. I point to the resurrection as, literally, my only hope.

Because that mindset is the biggest obstacle to peace between religions. Once you realize your way is one of countless ways, peace is possible. (And there is also something to say for being humble)

It has nothing to do with being humble, Christianity requires you to believe your God is the only God, its a basic tenant of the Religion, to be a Christian you must believe this or everything else falls apart.

It is also a basic tenant of war and suffering.

I just want to point out that monotheism and religion are not the same thing. Monotheism, by definition, is incompatible with other belief systems; religion is not.

Has anyone ever read Robert Heinlein's, The Green Hills of Earth? It's about the United States in a not so distant future. A President is elected who is the head of a religious/rightist political party that dupes the public about just how religious and anti-democratic they are. After being elected, he declares martial law and forms a religious/theocratic dictatorship. The protagonist, of course, becomes a member of a revolution against it.

I see more and more parallels to it day by day from this administration. This general should be dismissed from the service, not promoted to a cabinet position. We are going farther done a perilous road that leads to a bad end. It's not too late to change course, but if we don't throw Bush and the people behind him out of office in the next election, I fear for the country.

Heinlein wrote that book in the late '50's, if I remember correctly. It is supposed to be science fiction. Sometimes what is written as science fiction becomes fact.
