Ya know that I heard that all you black people be looking the same to white red neck cops. How was this cop to know that she was a Congressperson versus a gansta rapper with a gun and an attitude?

I'm not talking about a driver's-license style ID. I mean a security card with magnietic strip containing encrypted security clearance. Retinal scan. Thumbprint scan. Put all those together, and you've got a much more reobust security model.

And I agree with you that it's blown way out of silly proportion. But the media are hungry for a disaster right now, (the Iraq war is no longer fiery enough).

McKinney's a nut, but she's our nut. The difference here is that she hasn't gone around and wrapped herself in law enforcement for political purposes as some Repubicans have done with family values, rule of law, etc. That's a slight defference bewtween her and the Scalia thing. Still, rule of law and all that, let the legal process play out.

As an aside, this quote by Delay is somewhat ironic...

"This is incredible arrogance that sometimes hits these members of Congress, but especially Cynthia McKinney."

And, in this thread I also learned that Giddy listens to Boortz... it's all becoming a bit clearer. :)

I've seen epsiodes of Cops where people get tased - even if they're not the ones initially getting arrested - because they're yelling too loudly at the officers and won't calm down. It's interesting that Rep. Mckinney's father was a cop; don't know if he's still alive, but I bet if he was he might (privately) read her the riot act.

But as a ba-lack african-american male of color who was, while in college, asked three times by campus police to show my ID (once shouted at in the middle of the quad after leaving the library, and then questioned and apologized to), who was shadowed by a campus cop in the campus convenience store; who, as a teenager, was asked by cops if I had any guns or knives in my pockets while waiting for my mom to pick me up outside of an Exxon Station, I can relate to the emotional sting of being accosted by an officer possibly due to my race. Mix that in with the stress of a high performance, high profile, high pressure job that you have to re-apply for every two years, and you might have the perfect storm for an emotional ouburst.

Cops shouldn't treat congresswomen like tourists, but congresswomen probably shouldn't treat cops like mall security, either.

..based on this bio, I suppose it's a good thing she's too busy defending against assault charges, rather than sponsoring legislation to, I dunno, make the pterodactyl the national bird or something. But I guess if Strom Thurmond was good enough for the Senate...

... and she thanked her colleagues who "stood by her side"... BOTH of them!

I bet this sent Rush, Faux News et al into an angry rage. Rep. McKinney's 15 seconds of fame is over. Abramoff, NSA Spying, DeLay and Plame Gate will now float back to the top of the cesspool, we cal the daily news.

I wonder if all the people in prisons across the US right now for assaulting policemen could simply apologize and get off the hook. Not likely.

You're equating an elected congresswoman to convicts?

Yup. If you punch a policeman, that is a criminal act.

Back to the real world ...

Hitting a police with your cell phone (especially for a woman) IF CHARGED would plead down to a misdemeanor with no jail time (unless there is a prior).

    Versus bigtexy's world ...

All black people should do hard time whatever the crime.
