It's really great to have you back R2k. I just got back from vacation and unfortunately had to spend a day in the hospital while I was there due to some gastrointestinal issues. While I was there in pain, surrounded by crazies and generally losing my mind I actually thought to myself "Quit being a little b****, R2K has been doing this for several weeks" :) . I know how good you must be feeling to finally be back home and sleeping in your own bed. Best of luck to you on the healthier living plan, it's something we should all learn from and strive for.

Yeah, this is really the first time she has had to deal with something this severe since she got old enough to realize that people wont always be around...I keep telling her that it is no excuse for not passing all her finals. ;)

bro, I can't thank you enough for your support and your help during this time. Being able to pull you back in to cover for me took a HUGE worry off my and S's minds..... :)

    SJC,
not as much...they kinda gave me one of those little "looks" when they heard how many Monsters + sodas I drank per day. I get the impression that they feel I would be better off without them both. I'm really hoping to get a more exact cause at a later time..... or genetic tests could show there to be a common gene that cause weak artery walls, but we wont know about that for a little while...we need to get my brother in Dallas in on the research...he has had far more high bp problems in his life time than I have.

oh wow Harrisment, that sucks to hear. You are doing ok now? More of a gas problem or stomache flu?

It absolutely dominates being able to sleep at home now....I jsut hope the swelling at the lower stitch site goes down soon, I sure would hate to have to go back in for any reason.

    Sorry but some questions

    1. Hypothetically could hookers and cocaine be a risk factor for this thing?

    2. Did they tell you the Dr. could have found this in some "Hey I want to start exercising" type visit?

Glad you're back 2k! I was doing the good Catholic girl thing and praying heap big for ya. I've learned the hard way that heart surgery isn't ever simple so no more of them for you k? We are both on the "promoting a healthier lifestyle" boat together ;) now if I could just give up all fried foods!

yeah, I actually thought about that when I was informed this was gonna happen. I was told this surgery was pretty common here at the Texas Med Center, so I wasnt terribly worried, but then I remembered other stories I had heard recently, so it reminded me to keep it real and know to take nothing for granted. I gave up fried foods in general a while back, they didnt make me feel good anymore. The biggest hard part for me is that I love Mt Dews, and they just dont make good diet ones...at least DPs are a little tastier. Been macking down on alot of fruits lately, so I hope that helps.

weellll gonna take this seriously, tho I should know betta
    :p

    1) depends on how good the hooker is, if your artery walls are already weakened by environmental or genetic causes, a good session in the sack could cause all sorts of cardiac issues. Much less if you combine the heart stress of good coke, you could be asking for mucho problemos. Fortunately for me, I never enjoyed coke and haven't touched that in about 20 years

    2) Considering how long it has been since I did a serious workout, I would have insisted they did a cardiac stress test or some other type of scan to ensure that my system was up to a real cardiovascular workout. My mother has had some vascular issues as she got older, so that was always something I was mindful of.

    thanks Bmoney...

    ;)

    Thanks man.

They were serious I just put a comedic frosting on top.

I'm still not convinced it is your fault and a doctor could have helped you out by some screening. Good luck with recovery, my dad had his chest cracked at 52 and changed his ways so I am sure you can.

There was a little more to it than that. Without going into too much detail what prompted the ER visit was a night of no sleep, lots of abdominal pain, and quite a bit of blood. No homo. Seriously.

They did a CT scan while I was there and confirmed some inflamation but they don't know the cause. I have to go see a specialists this week back in Houston, but the symptoms are all under control now and I'm feeling MUCH better at the moment. Hopefully it was just a nasty bout of food poisoning, but I used to have episodes similar to this when I was younger so it's something I need to follow up on.

R2K, out of curiosity and not to try to make you feel bad about it, but what were your doctors' thoughts on diet soda?

I don't honestly believe there's nothing in them other than sodium like it says in the nutritional nonsense down the side of the can... normally when I try to kick sodas (lasts longer sometimes compared to others) I try to kick both regular and diet.

Glad you're up and recovering, definitely good to hear you've made it home.

Glad to see you are doing okay 2k. Try your best to rest as much as possible. I've seen several of my family members (including my uncle and grandma whom I live with in Houston) have open heart surgeries. The recovery is never easy and many times you are going to feel desperate that you aren't getting back to normal quickly. My advice is just be patient and just try to remain positive. Some things will restore themselves slowly, while others may take a lot longer, so don't lose hope. This is a long recovery (as i'm sure your doctors have told you already) so just be patient and try your best to slowly work yourself back to your normal activities (don't rush it!!).

Well now, that is the thing. Im sure during all this healthcare talk recently yall have heard folks talk of not seeing doctors for anything other than ER stuff because they have no insurance.

That is basically me. What little money I have budgeted for medical issues have gone towards the kids, I dont go to MDs unless I'm in dire pain. Fortunately for me, I haven't had a medical issue since I had my gall bladder(what was left of it) removed about 10 years ago. I had been in pain for about a week, and was basically forced into the doc by the wife, who then promptly informed us I needed emergency surgery cause my gall bladder had melted inside me.

This time around, if I had thought I had a circulatory issue, I would have found the money to go get checked out...but I had felt fine till the day my lower body went numb.

reminds me of what I detailed above....sound similar to you?

Totally understand not wanting to get into details, only reason I am being so forthcoming about this is to show folks that just cause you feel fine, it dont necessarily mean you are fine.

I'm not personally convinced that they are better, I'm trying to cut back eventually to zero, but that is probably gonna take me some time. I'm sucking down lots of fruit juices and tea and water with a DP or Dew mixed in from time to time.

The whole sodium thing is probably the deal-killer...and that isn't even considering the other chemicals they put in that probably isn't very good for us.

takin it easy Pigto...gonna try to finish my months-old Fallout 3 game, and spending a bit more time on here. Wife and girls get mad at me if they think I am pushing it. I picked up the 3Q tea pitcher, and they got mad at me since doc said not to lift over 5 lbs, adn the tea pitcher weighs almost 7. ;)

    Women...I swear.

Man that is so scary. :(

I have felt chest pains before and difficulty breathing but I am so young I have never thought to seriously get checked out. i need to do some research and figure out what I need to get done in order to be sure.

If I can give some unsolicited advice, you could make a video for yourself only that you can watch in a few years to describe exactly how you feel now and your feelings on how important smoking, stress and exercising are. It is easy to forget.

I read up on your condition after your original post, and that was damn scary. I'm glad you were within Life Flight distance of some of the best hospitals in the world.

People should definitely get checked out when they hit 30 and definitely by 40. I got life insurance at 32 and was forced to undergo a few tests. I was quite surprised when my cholestorol came back really high. Certain it was a mistake, I made an appointment with my doctor only to find it was indeed that high. I was asked if there was a history of high cholestorol in my family, and I told my doctor that was not the case. However, an hour later, I discovered both of my parents have cholesotorol as elevated as mine. They're both really active for their ages (70 and 65) and are in excellent cardio health. They've both undergone a battery of tests to make sure. It looks like we're one of those families that has benevolent high cholestorol. Still, I've modified my diet and try to be more active. Plantar fasciitis has kept me from being as truly active as I'd like, but I'm trying to keep myself in shape through exercise not as rough on the feet.

It's so easy to get a check up. Usually these come back fine, but they can catch a symptom that could well be fatal. Also it's good to talk to your parents and siblings about their health issues. Obviously if you have family members with cancer, heart attacks, or strokes, that's a red flag. But I had never considered talking to my parents about their blood pressure or cholestorol. There's some enlarged prostate issues in my family. There hasn't been a single case of prostate cancer, but I'll be undergoing annual checkups at 40 as unpleasant as that is. As men, we still get off light compared to what women undergo medically from their late teens.

As others have said, it's damn good to have you back in action (limited for now) R2K. Hopefully your ordeal will spur some of us to take a proactive approach to our health.
