I still think a 3 player draft would cause a bigger shakeup in this league and balance the power. In the real world, your rookie isn't going to be a starter unless he's top 3. If he's top 3, then he'll probably produce really nice numbers to where you can afford to let someone else go.

If we just have a rookie draft, then the next season will pretty much be the same as the season before the draft. I mean how many rookies in real life turn an average team into NBA champions in their first year?

Tim Duncan, and the spurs got him by tanking, so the only way a rookie draft might matter is if someone tanks their season which isn't very cool.

So I don't want to just have a rookie draft b/c that's too boring for the top teams. I'd rather have to give up 3 of my players and plan out a roster instead of inserting a rookie that may or may not produce.

I would also like both next season. But I hope we use the same system as this year - I do not liek giving up 3 to the draft -
I would like the opportunity to have some continuety in the team (I know I should not say this as I'm about to trade away my whole team).

I dont see the big problem in not protecting your good rookie. If he is extremly good and promising why not protect him - If he is not why play him as a 100% starter - I really think it would work out fine if you just allowed people too have more than 5 players qualify as starters like this year. If he then is so much better than your other starters you jsut protect him - If he is not this good yet you get the opportunity to give up other players as your 4th and 5th guy - and probably they will have produced better or the same too. I think this worked fine this year (atleast for me - as the 4 players I could choose from had very simular stats) so I don't see the big issue. This is also why I gave up Snow (who also had the better stats) and kept Nash (who I hope have a better future) as he had a breakout season in the NBA and could produce better next year and thus Cat adjusting him some up.

I think the 3-round draft(because if each team gives up three players you would need three rounds) would be interesting, it would certainly give the lesser teams and ability to quickly improve by grabbing a starter from an elite team, and it would force the elite teams to draft well if they plan to remain competitive.

However, I fear for the mediocre teams. Much like real life, unless they can either trade for a draft pick, or a star player, they probably won't get any better players than they had before. Oh well, thems the breaks.

BTW, if our starters don't get drafted, although I don't doubt perrenial all-stars Vitaly Potapenko and Bryant Stith will be gobbled up, what happens to them?

Do we get them back, or do you(TheCat) put them on one of the scrub teams?

    BGM,

Why would you or anyone spend hours trying to trade for a player or construct a championship team only to see your players leave in a common draft? I mean really. The whole point of becoming a GM is to BUILD a team. Your suggestion would tear teams apart every year. Good teams won't always be good and bad teams won't always be bad because younger players develop and older players age. That is why a rookie draft is all that is needed. If rookies never develop in this game, then there is no point to having a keeper league.

The point is I don't want to spend time on a team I will lose at the end of the year.

Personally, I would like to keep the 2 round draft at least for next year, maybe 2. That's kind of what I was planning on. Also I think you should be able to choose from just the top 6 players that get the most time on the floor(if that makes sense) to put into the draft.

I do agree kbm - but I also think giving up 2 starters is not so bad if you are allowed to have more than 5 players qualify as starters - I think this will be best for all:

It will even out teams - not fast - but that is some of the idea too - you need to build your team. You will get the opportunity to preotect a younger player by giving up your 6th man or "top bench players" that should produce simular numbers.

I think giving up more than 2 starers will suck as you will lose what you have tried building all season with trades an picks. I know giving up 3 players will hurt the top teams the most but I dont want that - I want to prey it away from them building up my team to greater glory. As everyone also should know by now I'm also one of those with 3 super players in Iverson, Mutumbo and Marion (will be amazing soon) but I'm also not afraid to trade away any of them (yeah even Marion) so I will not stack my team with 3 good players and keep them. (Marion is not producing that good in the sim someone could argue - but as Cat have said several times he will adjust players when they are doing better in real life than in the sim so he will be).

Forget what I said, whatever rules we try, I'll work with and prepare my team for them.

I think this draft is really weak. I bet those bad GM controlled teams must be salivating at the chance of picking up Theo Ratliff or Larry Hughes to compete with teams that have 3 superstars in their lineup that will never disapear as long as we keep with the 2 player draft.

I bet you that over 70% of that list of unprotected players will be there for next seasons draft.

I'm not for giving up 3 players in the draft - but if you want to do it jsut to shake things up a bit you could have the NBA finalist give up 3 starters and award them and the 2 bottom teams in this league 3 draftpicks 1-3 while every other only has 2 picks - 1st and 3rd round (2nd round only for the 2 worst teams and the 2 best teams). I dont like this but it could be a good compromise between giving up 3 and 2 players too the draft - as I really hate the idea of giving up 3 players.

I do not argue with that - but I dont agree that this says the system is bad. what you also have to consider is taht several did not know who to put up in the 2 players draft - and you was one of them that changed your mind several times.

I will bet you that 5 or more of the 10 first players picked this year will not be submitted next season in a 2 round draft.

Don't knock Theo Ratliff, but in the right system, especially with Zones coming, he could be a big part of a playoff team.

But no matter how you shake it, the bad teams and the very good teams will be the only ones to be affected by this. The mediocre teams will not.

I've changed my mind, I prefer the two round draft over the three rounder because it forces you to consider how a draftee fits with your team rather than "WooHoo! a superstar for me!".

However, if you're set on the three-rounder, how about just making the top 4(Conference Finalists) and bottom 4 teams submit three players from among their top 6.

I'm not going to judge how this 2 round draft will work until we complete a season.

When I was making all of my deals, I was making them under the assumption a 3 player draft was on the horizon.

It's cool though, like I said in a previous post. Throw whatever rules at me and I'll adjust...

I totally disagree that a common draft will somehow help the bad teams get better while at the same time causing the good teams to get a little bit worse. If anything, the good teams will benefit more. Here I am making the assumption that bad teams by their nature have younger players and good teams by their nature have older players. Therfore, the common draft will benefit good teams more than the bad teams because the talent level is better than in the rookie draft, so even though the good teams pick toward the bottom they still have a better chance to nab a good young player while at the same time putting in one of their older veteran players who is past his prime in the draft. The rookie draft, however, is weighted to the bad teams because it forces older teams to draft from a much smaller talent pool and also forces them to keep their older players.

I want to keep the league fair, but I also don't want to punish people for being good GMs. That's why I don't like the idea of a 3 round or more draft for upcoming seasons. There isn't much point to working hard for a season and then losing 60% of your team to the draft and starting all over. Theo Ratliff may not seem like a superstar, but he certainly is an improvement over the starter a bad team gives up. We don't need radical changes to make the league a success-- that's not the way the NBA runs and its not the way this league should run. You have a challenge if you don't own a top of the line team, but that is part of what should make it fun. In all of my leagues, I always sneak up with people by little moves continually that make me a success. That's what should happen here-- over the next couple of seasons the great teams will decline a little and the bad teams will get pretty good... things will level out. Especially with the rookie draft, in which there's a big gap between the top picks and the mid to late picks. For right now I am not going to decide officially on having a two round draft for next season. If I do, I will likely give teams the option of submitting two of their top 6 or maybe even 7. I will decide hopefully tomorrow, but still want some more input. 9 p.m. tomorrow sound good with everyone for the draft?

    Kbm,

Unfortunately I don't have playoff box scores anymore... I only have a certain amount of memory, and with building this season, future rookies, etc. I deleted the playoffs from last season (playoff stats) today so that I could have enough memory to work everything. I thought I had gotten all stat requests... sorry.

Based on need/request, the Knicks select David Wesley with the 7th pick of the second round.
