Milosevic's trial began in 2002. Milosevic died in 2006 with his trial not completed. There was never a ruling in the trial.

The only ruling against him came posthumously in a Serbian court that held no weight because Milosevic wasn't around to defend himself.

International courts are generally a joke.

interesting, since one of the arguements against invading iraq was saddam woul dnever make common cause w/ the islamofascists since he was secular. apparently not, so along with saddam lui stesso, strike one more liberal objection for the war from the books tonight.

Not really, he was still at odds with any power that tried to overtake ANY of his power. The stated goal of Al Qaeda was to set up a caliphate, and Saddam would not be its head.

saddam and islamists hate each other. his government was secular. women were given as much equality as any mid east nation. etc etc. his right hand man was a roman catholic. remember the reason obl went against the saudis was because they wouldn't let him and his boys defend saudi against a possible iraqi invasion.

lets just hope this doesn't spike the civil war in iraq. though to be honest its probably irrelevant to the day to day lives of iraqis. they're too busy avoiding car bombs to care.

i think that has been the point all along. as bad as it is, i think things in iraq are going EXACTLY as planned. at some point people need to realize that it is either total incompetence or total criminality - i think it is the later. these arent dumb people running the show (aside from bush, but he is just a puppet anyway).

who in their right mind would have disbanded the entire military and let them keep their weapons?

who in their right mind would have just allowed all the looting to take place? the only place they guarded was the office of the oil ministry.

does the bush family, cheney and all their friends make more money if we are there for 1 year or 10 years?

i disagree. i dont think the administration has been intentionally making these mistakes. i really think they have been ideologically warped and believed in this mission. of course they should have listened to the old guard of the republicans and bush senior's people and realized it would be the disaster it is now. but i don't think they like it. there are good people in the government. if they weren't they'd be in the private sector making real money.

frankly i dont think anyone in the US nor iraq nor even its neighbors benefit from a civil war. jordan and syria dont because they have to take the refugees. iran maybe. sunnis are hurt because they are being killed. shias are hurt because a stable country would have them ruling and benefiting from the oil revenue. its in the US's interest to restore order. it makes the mission look more legitimate. it brings back some prestige.

however i dont think anyone has a solution now. if i was put in charge of a 100 billion dollar budget to fix iraq i'd have no clue.

i don't believe in wide ranging conspiracies. however i do think smart people can do incredibly stupid things.

Saddam Hussein hanged, says Al Hurra TV station

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S.-backed Iraqi television station Al Hurra said Saddam Hussein had been executed by hanging shortly before 6 a.m. (0300 GMT) on Saturday.

The former Iraqi president ousted in April 2003 by a U.S.- led invasion was convicted in November of crimes against humanity over the killings of 148 Shi'ite villagers from Dujail after a failed assassination bid in 1982.

An appeals court upheld the death penalty on Tuesday. Iraq's government has kept details of its plans to conduct the execution completely secret amid concerns it could spark a violent backlash from his former supporters.

Again, I don't think there are too many people who see it as anything but a charade. Saddam was not good at playing with others in any case. Despite that, I can envision a scenario where they would work together. After all, the US worked with proto-al Qaeda in Afghanistan. The problem is that so many people 'on the right' act as if it is a foregone conclusion. It is anything but and as I see it the aforementioned ‘right’, when they know what they are talking about, use the idea very disingenuously as a political tool.

Saddam is dead. The insurgency continues. Neo-cons blame liberals for everything.
