No, that is why I said succession is untenable.

OK. I missed your point because this thread is about TEXAS, not other states. So the "morons" of Texas actually have a gripe. California is also going broke, and they have a huge federal tax/spend imbalance.

Maybe the federal government should stop spending so much money and let the states figure out how best to take care of their own citizens. Top down government has proven to be a failure over and over again.

And bottom up government is epically worse, which is why we have top down government in the first place.

There's very few core federal government functions that state governments have proven markedly better at doing, and many at which they are far worse due in large part to questions of scale.

No. While similar stuff has been referenced by Californians since at least my college years in the early 80's... cleaved from the rest of the US economy and literally by itself, CA would not come close to the numbers in your links. Where will you get your water? The Colorado River Compact of 1922 would be null and void and Colorado River water would not be coming your way at a rate of 1.2 million acre feet per year. (Acre foot = enough water to flood one acre to a depth of one foot... essentially 1.2 million flooded football fields.) Bye-bye San Diego.

Where would you get your electricity?

See all those thick red lines? That's electricity coming into California, the largest state importer of electricity. It's a huge amount and it would no longer be subsidized by BPA and the Bureau of Reclamation.

No to mention defense contracts, interstate highways, universities, etc.

i see your point. and I used the words "if california seceded" so I set myself up for your scenario of actually going through with all out doomsday Mad Max secession.

what I meant, and according to those links, is that California's economy (as does Texas and NY) is bigger than some small nations currently, as it stands.

You do realize that the U.S. is on track to be totally energy independent by 2030 right? They will be bigger producers of oil than the Saudis by 2020.
    http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/nov/12/us-seen-passing-saudis-global-oil-king-2020/

Part of the reason for that is the hike in fuel efficiency for cars implemented by Obama. Another reason for that is the increase in oil production under Obama.

The secessionists are morons. Because they don't have a clue, period. Texas (the state), as I said at the beginning, is an outlier for a number of fairly obvious reasons. And no they don't have a gripe - federal outlays are for our mutual benefit as a country. It's not the federal government's fault that a bunch of republican-controlled states are destitute beggars.

I joined the Marines and fought for America to protect order and ensure freedom not for a bunch of right leaners to get butt hurt and want to secede.. How can somebody say they support our troops but then want to secede?

And my point is that you cannot make those statements, even if you are the head of the Chamber of Commerce for CA or TX or whoever because you cannot separate the economy of a state from that of the union.
