Man if I only spent $6.78 on a meal I'd feel really proud of myself for spending so little!

I'm going to El Tiempo tonight for the 4th Friday in a row and on average there I spend about $60 including food and drinks. It adds up, but I can't quit!

Two months ago I would have thought the same thing if someone else had made this thread. It's just a difference in mentality now. For example I don't look at fast food restaurants as places to get something just because I'm out, but more like last resorts if there's nothing to eat at home or if I have absolutely no time.

One thought comes to mind: that can't be healthy eating if it's so cheap...

Wish I would have checked out that thread earlier. I used to live in the dorms last year, and I ate at fast food places all the time (although I mostly just used the dine-in dollars and bevo bucks that were part of my housing contract). This year, I finally moved to an apartment, so I've had to change my eating habits a bit too. It really hasn't been too bad though. I'm learning how to cook over the phone (thanks mom ), so that's been a big help (I prefer the food I cook as opposed to eating out). I'm already doing a couple of other things that were mentioned in that thread (eating more fruits, cheap cereal, George Foreman grill, peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, eggs, etc.). I need to learn a few new meals though...thinking about trying spaghetti (or something with similar ingredients) this weekend.

I don't really know for sure what I spend on groceries every week, but I'm guessing it is around $40-$50. I could maybe get it down a little more if I tried.

Awesome. I love stuff like this. Food is one of the biggest wastes of money/overexpenditures people have. Make it a game my man - see what else you can cut out... then save and invest what you cut out. Good luck. :)

Congrats, you've come a long way from that previous thread.

Where do you find fish fillets for 43 cents? The cheapest I can find is this big box of 10 at HEB for $6.99.

Been doing this for years. Buy burgers, chicken parts, and fish on special (although I always recommend beef and chicken on special. The only time I buy fish on special is behind the butchers counter, per a buddy who worked in a groc. store in his 20's.

That said, you can do amazing things in your own kitchen. Quite frankly, we all know how to put crap in a micro these days.

Anyone who has put crap in a microwave and shoved something on it knows how to cook. Granted, there are steps, but I will teach you.

Will you be a top Chef? Probably not. Can you impress the hell out of a girl?

    Absolutely.

In fact, I know there are a few cooks that can help you along the way.

I say, (only because I'm not wanting to go downstairs to find a recipe)

start a Cooking class 101 on here, where we can show the simplest of recipes.

then cookimg 102, and so on.

I love seeing different ideas, and, to be honest, until I realized the boredom of women and relationships did I become decent at it.

I'm definitely with you on that. Spending as little money on food has always been a fun game and I would love a monster recipe/idea thread.

I've always been very responsible with my food budget but I would be interested in some more ideas.

Congrats CCR! Less than $150/month for food?!? That is ridiculous! I can imagine it takes a lot of discipline to keep that up.

My GF and I are still spending quite a bit of money on food every month, but we cut it down pretty dramatically since CCR's original post I think. We're currently spending about $300-$400 a week on food which is a lot better than before. We accomplish this by eating take-out most of the time now instead of eating in the restaurant... we save tons of money on tips because of this.

It was your idea, but I am more than willing to try and tackle that, if you don't mind.

(quite frankly, I'm better at reading your analysis of the Rox)

I love these damn things (except I get regular instead the Beer Battered like the box says). They're 4.28 a box at Wal-Mart and as I said before they take only 4 minutes on the Foreman grill.

I think we tried the 'cookbook' thing on here once before but I'm not sure.

And congrats CCR, that's awesome to have that kind of savings month to month.
