I wish it was a bit more creative but it looks nice. Everyone will remember Hakeem when they see it. It's a great day for Houston Rockets fans.
i agree. It could have been a lot worse given the limitations - but it could have been a lot more creative.
I think it's a very honorable day for Hakeem and the Rockets nation. As a Muslim, I think you can hardly make a more creative one given the limitations and anyone who have followed the NBA will remember Hakeem's accomplishments when looking at this monument. The religious rule is that you can't do art that resembles or looks anywhere near like a pagan. The rest is open to interpretation. Many applications of Islamic law allows human figures (in 2-D, not 3-D) as long as the face isn't defining a real identifiably person. So the monument might have included a guy wearing no. 34's drawing (an alley-oop or a ferocious block) on another player.
I would like to see a picture of the whole monument and how it looks against Toyota Center. Not just the statue itself. When I was down there this week picking up the TMac figurine it looked like it was shaping up really nice, and they hadn't even put the statue in yet. So I'd imagine the abstract part of the monument is the base the statue sits in, which is supposed to resemble his "dream shake" motion if I recall, add the park benches surrounding it, then the statue itself with his jersey and bio and I think you have a very respectful, tasteful and fitting tribute to the best player in franchise history.
Knowing the limitations the Rockets were faced with, I think the monument to Dream is excellent, and like several thousand other folks here, I can't wait to get my picture taken standing next to it!
Was there...shook dream and clyde and bill worrell's hands...talked a scalper into givin me 2 tickets at 8 bucks a piece and got to see my favorite music artist in attendance...jay-z. Pretty sweet night. I think the monument is great, i mean...yea it would be cool to have an actual statue of hakeem dream shakin robinson or something.....but its different. and different is good, we're setting a trend. Great night...good win
I know I take the chance of getting a lot of crap from people, but I think the monument is terribly uncreative. I mean, tell a class of 2nd graders to make a monument for a basketball player without using his face, and half of them would probably draw some sort of basic shape (ie., a rectangle) with his jersey, his name, and a basketball on it. And to think this took 2 years to come up with and complete. I envisioned something more like a bouqet of items that represent his career. A basket/rim, his MVP award, his DPOY awards, the number "3,830" to signify his total career blocks, etc. As is, I think it looks like a candy bar.
I'll never change pal. not for you, not for anyone. I'll never stop loving the old school. its eternal. FOREVER.
And you shouldn't. You make this board a more entertaining place. If one guy finds it annoying, well, he can always utilize the ignore feature. It'll be his loss.
i went to the ceremony and got to sit next to hakeems family in the "VIP" area. The rockets asked my dad if he wanted these tickets because they had couple extra seats. He was the one honored as a long time season ticket holder at wendesdays game. Was pretty cool experience. I think we got seated in the wrong row cause it was all hakeems friends/family and the sculptors family, then there was me and my dad.
