Great call on textbooks, that whole scam is a joke. How about protein, the kind you mix to make shakes. Why the hell is that so expensive? Comic books got expensive. Vegetables that come in the form of "party tray" or salads in a bag are expensive. The price people will pay to not cut their own veggies.

Just wanted to add that I only shave twice a week because my face is so sensitive. So LAY OFF!!!

    Some others:

Mattresses – 4 figures for a mattress??? That seems like quite a markup.

Fondue – I know the chicks dig Fondue restaurants, but MAN they are expensive. I don’t like paying $100 to cook my own food.

    Concessions at Movies/Sporting Events/Concerts – Again, that’s got to be a 500% markup.

Anything and Everything Related to Weddings - well, except the band... ;)

Shoes are one thing you don't want to skimp on... a pair of well-maintained dress shoes can last you decades. I won't really spend over 60-70 on sneakers since I'm a fan of classic styles (Rod Lavers, Stan Smiths), but I'll spend more on specialized shoes such as soccer cleats

But yeah, seconding retail cables (HDMI, audio, etc) and textbooks

    On shoes:
The price of basketball shoes has actually come down significantly (Nike anyways) since the mid-90's. Even when they re-release retros the price is far less than what it once was. Just saying...

you spend a 1/3 of your life in bed. a great mattress is worth 4 figures. but i like to go the less expensive route and suggest memory foam. makes me want to sleep just thinking about it.

A 4 figure mattress should last 20+ years. That being the case, it is not expensive, especially if it gives you a good night's sleep and no aches and pains. It is the single item you spend the most time on. 8 hours a night, 350 nights a year (2 weeks for vacation) for 10 years is 28000 hours. If you pay $2800 for that mattress you ar essentially paying 10 cents an hour for a quality night's sleep. Stretch that out to 20 years and it's a nickle an hour. Include your spouse and it's down even more.

My mom has a couple of very nice wooden pieces that are handmade in Mexico. Not extravagant, just well-made, sturdy, beautiful craftwork. She was looking for a new bedroom set recently, and saw one she liked "by" Ralph Lauren. They were similar to what she had, and looked on the back of the dresser & it had the same tradesman's stamp. It cost 4X what she paid for hers, just for the satisfaction of buying something labeled "Ralph Lauren".

    Good call on diesel.

Wait - GUYS actually buy designer jeans??

Unless "designer" means a $40 pair of Levis, this it totally new to me.

If someone needs to spend 320 bucks to make their ass look great, they must have one ugly ass ass.

I don't know where to start. So much stuff is so ridiculously priced that pure-blooded cheapskates like me can find it hard to buy anything.
