I lived in Andrews for 1.5 years and really enjoyed my times there. The only bad thing is that it's far from Gregory (only a 10 minute walk though). Being far from PCL is no biggie since you can always study at the Texas Union or the FAC. I am also pretty sure that only honors kids stay at the honors dorms.
You don't need to be in an honors program to be in the honors dorm. If you set roommate preferences to a friend in honors, they'll put you in. Or if you have a good academic record, good SAT scores, they'll allow you to live there. Also, if you've lived there before, you can reapply in December to have first dibs at the honors dorms. The Quad runs a lot of events which include free food and socials, so I loved being in the Quad.
I stayed in Jester East (second floor Rm 273) my freshman year ('03-'04) Great experience. Still friends with a ton of people that lived on that floor. Highlight of staying there was sneaking a keg up into our bathroom shower (I shared a suite with my roommate and two other guys). Had a huge party on our entire hallway. Looking back on it could have been kicked out of Jester or even worse had we gotten caught. Did crazy stuff like that Freshman year.
Somewhat off topic but just a general question: Is freshman year of college the year where you'll have the most fun as compared to the latter years of college?
That's pretty subjective. Freshman year is a lot of fun because everything is new and thrilling. But, you are somewhat limited in what you can do. At my school, freshmen couldn't have a car and that basically funneled all the freshmen to frat row. In later years you really develop your group of friends. Turning 21 gives you way more opportunities for fun I think.
Damn son.. you do have a lot of questions... I gotta tell you though, when I'm there in 2010... hit me up =) Will be fun! Hook 'em! Eh.. still a downer that I couldn't get in this year.
I second the recommendation for freshman seminar. My freshman seminar was my favorite class ever at UT. We met once a week for 3 hours...2.5 hours really. My professor was a higher up in the admin so our class met in the tower. We were required to attend UT events and write one page summaries...sports, speakers, whatever we wanted...it was fun and life sucks compared to those days
HA if you master time management well enough, it just get better imo although, it will feel like fresh yr was the most fun because the jump from HS to college is most noticeable then. After that, the 'novelty' wears off a bit. However, if you can get older friends to hook you up with an ID head down to 6th St on weekends or go to a West Campus house party, frat party, football games, etc. Don't blow fresh yr off though because I've seen a lot of my friends who switched to anti-social mode to repair the GPA damage from going out of control.
I may have stayed in that exact room last year. Crazy. But no parties, barely knew any of my floormates actually. I didn't find Jester in general to be social. Most people kept to themselves. Business school no longer has a language requirement, I think you are set if you do 3 years in hs. Liberal Arts requires 4 semesters worth of language.
there's this test for nat. science students called the ALEKS test; it will replace the SAT subject test... anyone ever took it or know about it...
what's the freshman experience like at UT? can anyone tell me how to get there from houston? i am smart and in the honors program. can someone tell me what that's like? what happens if you get a B in a course? will you walk me to my first class?
i took it a couple days ago. its a math test. it decides what level math they put u in. it was due by june 1 so you better hurry and take it. just take it without studying your first time because you can take it multiple times. and its untimed so you can look up formulas you forgot online. study your logarithms before hand though and thats pretty much it. btw do you have a roomate yet?
Oh, to be young, innocent, and scared out of his wits during the first year of college... Trust me, you'll be fine. Google map your directions. Getting Bs is NOT the end of the world. If you are too hung up on getting Bs, you'll have a nervous breakdown.
Forgive me if you are just playing along, but I'm pretty sure Eric Riley was just making fun of vstexas
