In Texas, is it possible to get unemployement benefits when you're laid off. I know they'll give them if you're fired. Anybody know?

Yeah, as long as your employer says you were laid off you should be able to receive unemployment. I know I did when I was.

yes, they are for being laid off. if you get fired for violating a company policy they are hard to impossible to get.

the only thing about being laid off is you have to have enough hours and compensation

Did you get a severance package?

My understanding is that unemployment benefits last for 6 months. If you got a severance, wait until it runs out before collecting unemployment. That should give you a decent chance at keeping your head above water until you find something else.

    Good luck.

I doubt he got a severance package and is asking about unemployment.

I have a question as well, I would really appreciate an answer.

Say you're working as a 1099 and this is temporary work/contract and your assignment is complete, can you apply for unemployment benefits?

I don't believe you qualify since the employer does not contribute FICA/FUTA/SUTA taxes on your behalf.

That's stupid advice. You apply for unemployment as soon as you are laid off. That way you are paid for the entire time you unemployed.

My brother got laid off after 30 years at a company. In the year after his layoff, he received 6 months severance pay, 1 year of unemployment, and his defined pension.

Decide not look too hard for work, since he planning to retire anyway.

got laid off in august of 2010. took me almost 2 years to find a real job with compensation.just take it for what it's worth.

if you got severance, like another poster mentioned, don't file for unemployment until your severance is up. that should buy you time if you needed it.

    those bills will keep comin.

Try to get a job ASAP.

Very hard to get a job after 6+ months of being unemployed. Companies dont like hiring such people.

What's the deal with applying for unemployment? Is it for people who feel like they're too good to do anything than what they are used to? Don't want to stoop too low? There is massive work out there.

Well, everywhere I go these days I see " Now Hiring" sings. Just trying to help out the lazy people. Better to keep your dignity than leeching off of the rest of working folks.

It helps bridge the gap until he gets his next job.

Im gonna have to say id agree with this. There is plenty of work out there. It may not be ideal to the average but it would beat filing for unemployment. If your resume shows you actually want to work, then it will look a lot better than the guy who shows up with a 7 month gap between his last job.
