http://82games.com/nbadraft2006.htm 10. Darius Washington, PG, Memphis % Chance to Start – 23.38% Was similar to: Gilbert Arenas, Chauncey Billups, Maurice Williams This is the only major surprise on this list. Washington compared favorably to Gilbert Arenas even though he had a down year at Memphis this year. Like Arenas, his game is probably more suited to the NBA than to college. His one-on-one abilities will make him a threat on the offensive end because he can penetrate, dish and hit the outside shot. He’s held back a bit since he doesn’t seem to understand the game that well. Ideally, he should be drafted by team like Atlanta in the upper part of the second round. In a place like that, he would get playing time to develop his skills and be on a team that will be a patient with his mistakes. Guess who they rank up with the big boys for a high % chance of becoming a starter - essentially equal to Marcus Williams - surprise!!!! Worth a look at summer league! Which means of course we won't do it....
Missed that one amongst the 3000 Rudy Gay for Battier threads.... Glad we did something right. Perhaps the brain rust is getting over its dumb virus....
What about Big Ten Player of the Year Terence Dials? He could be a reasonable backup PF/C I would think.
players i think would be worth a look and could help us out there are Allan Raye, Caner-Medley (although Novak's probably got him covered) and definetely Pittsnogle.
an almost complete list of the undrafted's destination and of the summer team's rosters http://www.draftexpress.com/viewarticle.php?a=1391 mike gansey will play for the heat still hope for thomas gardner and marcus slaughter ...
Caner-Medley is not better than Pittsnoggle, who himself is not as accurate as Novak. Allen Ray is a good guy to consider, Im disappointed Gansey is going to Miami... he's a baller.
of those players, only carl krauser and eric hicks are not on any summer league team according to draftexpress list ...
Cameron Bennerman (NC State) and Eric Hicks (Cincy) are from right around where I live in NC. Tab 'em Rockets....
I've never really quite understood from where this opinion developed. Has Coach ever not played a rookie who was worthy of playing? Looking at the New York draft picks taken during his tenure, I really wasn't able to find one who necessarily deserved bigtime minutes. I apologize in advance if I've overlooked a key situation, but truly, I'm just trying to understand this "JVG doesn't play rookies" belief. I think, similar to most coaches, our coach just wants to win, and he wants players to play with effort and with sensibility. Luther and Chuck Hayes earned their respective playing times this year. Sure, injuries alllowed a longer leash with regard to the rookie mistakes (As much as I love the effort from Luther & Chuck, they both had their fair share of goofs), but ultimately those guys proved that they belong on this team. And they will get better. I tend to think SNovak will indeed get quality minutes this year. From what I've read, he appears to be a high-bball IQ guy with a sincere desire to get better and work on his game. He, along with any undrafted rookies we consider, will have every opportunity to work hard, be attentive, and compete in practice for what is deserved.
I believe a lot of it has to do with the evidence from what JVG has DONE, more than what he has said/not said, specifically. Take late last season as an example. With a roster full of young and unproven talent, and once the playoffs were no longer a possibility (and in fact in a situation where more losses would only have improved our draft position), rather than go ahead and play the younger players (to 'see what they might be able to do'), he instead continued to lean heavy minutes on players like JHoward, and even favoring aged vets like Brunson over a younger (and senselessly released) player like JL3. It's that JVG only cares about one thing: winning. Some would say this is not a bad thing, and it's not; however, he has a short-sightedness about him when it comes to this issue. JVG would happily sacrifice the *possibility* of winning tomorrow for more of an assurance of *winning today*. This is why he prefers veterans to young players. This is why he seldom expresses interest in 'developing' young players, this explains why he is so disinterested in the draft each year. This explains why rookies only get real minutes only when there is a necessity - Luther played because Sura was out, Hayes played because Swift was out, etc etc. As far as I can tell, there has never been anything shown about JVG which would indicate that he has ever been any different about this issue. JVG is perfectly happy to be on Mike James' doorstep at the very first second he is allowed to be there, but offers nothing but a disinterested yawn when presented with a potentially dazzlingly talented young player like Rudy Gay. He feels that they are a waste of his time, and a distraction from the only thing that matters - winning the next game. I don't hate JVG or anything, but I can tell you this: IF he ever manages to coach a team to a championship, the one thing that is certain is that it would be a short-lived reign. No 'Dynasties' for JVG - he is too caught up in the present to concern himself with the future, hence his rosters are ALWAYS characterized as 'needing youth and athleticism'. He always spends whatever youth and athleticism he has to buy veteran experience. I have a sneaking suspicion that JVG and Morey will not be able to co-exist, because Morey's area of expertise is necessarily concerned with more than just the next game. Anyway, that's my theory as an answer to your question.
I like Darius Washington but I would be interested in knowing more about Chris Mcray... I know he was Maryland's leading scorer before he got hurt and I remember him playing well againist Duke the year before. Any more info from anyone?
Wow. Mike Gansey just got signed to a two year deal with Miami. Ten teams contacted him after he went undrafted. Anyone else upset that we didn't didn't use our bought 2nd round pick on him instead of Eliyahu?
http://www.dailymail.com/news/Sports/2006070327/ I guess they already filled up their quota of WVU players. "MORGANTOWN -- Patrick Beilein already has a commitment to play basketball for the Netherlands in Europe. But before he goes abroad, the top reserve on the West Virginia University men's team the past two years is going to test the NBA waters. Beilein, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound guard will be working out for five days this week with the Houston Rockets. If he makes their rookie team, he'll then move on to Las Vegas for games in the NBA's summer rookie league. "Patrick was invited to participate by Jeff Van Gundy, Houston's head coach," WVU Coach John Beilein explained. "He was one of my recruits way back when." Indeed, Van Gundy played for the Mountaineer mentor a year in the early 1980s at Nazareth College. "This is just an opportunity for Patrick to really work out (with NBA prospects)," the elder Beilein said. "The people in Holland are aware that he has this opportunity, and they support it." Young Beilein has to feel better than WVU teammates Kevin Pittsnogle and Mike Gansey, who were snubbed in last week's NBA Draft. Both were listed as definite professional prospects. So they had to be deeply disappointed in not being among the 60 players drafted. Pittsnogle and Gansey have been considering offers to sign as free agents. Each obviously will select a team affording him the best chance of sticking. Patrick Beilein averaged 8.0 points and 2.2 rebounds per game this past season. He also had 73 assists and 36 steals as WVU posted a 22-11 record and reached the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16. He's happy for the opportunity to play in Europe. But Pittsnogle and Gansey both still are hopeful of making it in the NBA."
Did you guys see whom Draft Express compared Menshah-Bonsu to? Best case scenario - Stromile Swift Worst case scenario - Malick Badiane Pops should sure for defamation (or defication) of character!!!
