This brainwashing stuff isn't an innovation or anything. Before the threat of being brainwashed by Muslim fundamentalists, it was the Viet Cong brainwashing POWs, and before that communists generally on the Russians, Chinese, Europeans, and the American blue collar workers of the early 20th century. We had David Koresh, the Moonies, and so on. There was the Hitler Youth. We dropped bombs on Iraq saying we wanted to win the hearts and minds of Iraqis -- maybe one of the less successful examples. Iranian youth, I'm told, are indoctrinated to hate the USA. American youth, meanwhile, are indoctrinated to have fear and suspicion of the Iranians. Some would say the modern evangelical protestant church engages in it as well. I suppose the difference between brainwashing and evangelism is whether you like the belief system or not. Anyway, the stuff works. If you can provide for the emotional needs of people who are not finding it elsewhere, you can proselytize to them very effectively. The solution to brainwashing is more brainwashing -- if you can do it sooner or better or bigger than the competition, you gain market share. The US imo does a very good job of this and we're all pretty well indoctrinated to be good little Americans. But we can't hope to have 100% coverage, and ISIL, the Moonies, the Militia Movement, and other competitors will snag a few of their own. Unfortunately, ISIL especially only needs a few to have an impact out of all proportion with their market share.
