We never retired Maxwell's, Cassell's, Elie's, Horry's, Bullard, Chilcutt, K. Smith, OT's, Scotty Brooks, Herrera's, etc. I loved those teams as much as anyone else on here but they didn't get their jerseys retired.
The only way I can see it happening now is if we win a championship with him doing what he does best. he doesnt have to score 24 ppg. We just have to win. I think so far he deserves it more than tmac altho tmac is by far the more talented one. however, he is teetering on being pippen part 2. (who never asked to be traded either).
Battier is what being a rocket is all about.

If Battier retires a Rocket and we win a championship with him as our captain or co-captain - then yes. I'd do it.

On a side note - I wish Mutumbo would have played his whole career with us. He's definitely the kind of guy you could be proud to see his number hanging from the rafters. Unfortunately, a few years in the twilight of his career isn't really enough reason to retire his jersey.

We'll retire his number around the same time the SPURS retire Bruce Bowen's number,

    So...

when do you think that will be?

    Wow a Shane only Fan..

I like Battier a lot and what he brings to this team but I don't think he will ever get his number retired by any team. That's just not the type of player he is.

There has been some precedents, for example, the spurs retired avery johnson, mostly because of his leadership qualities on and off the court.

Cleveland would have to make it to the Finals. I'm pretty sure the Rockets would make it to the finals if Battier is playing well enough to get his jersey retired.

Lets see, in order to not be laughed out of the building, I would think you would need to see from Battier at least one chip. What he would then have over the Maxwells, Elies, Cassells, and Horrys would be tenure with the team. He came in during the 06-07 season so if he gave them 8 good years, and a chip, along with his stellar defense I could see it being justified. Its not just about points or stats. I think players like Cassell, Horry, Smith, et al would have a better shot with more service to the team.

Since when is retiring a jersey number equated to points scored?

I dont see how his jersey isnt retired if he finishes his 10+ year career in Houston.

Maybe if he becomes a winning head coach in a few years, we could toss his number up for respect

When he stops disappearing in the playoffs on the road. The @ in the playoffs is enough to make him shudder.

Only acceptable to be even in consideration is if he wins at least 3 Defensive Player Of the Year's and a championship here.

Get an actual DPOY (not just a top five) and a Championship or two... we'll see.

I love Battier, but I just think a very special set of circumstances would have to happen.

I mean, we're talking about the city that The Dream played in here!
