So let me get this straight, we trade one of the only defensive minded players on the team for a scorer who plays no defense and doesn't rebound either?

I have to laugh at whoever said "When was the last time Shandon won a game for us?" How quickly everyone forgets the Robert Horry's of the NBA. The guys that do the little things that add up to wins, like play defense, set the picks that allow a teamate to shoot an open jumper. Have you ever seen Glen Rice set a pick?

Does this mean fewer shots for Mobley? Wasn't Rice b****ing about not getting the ball in last year's playoffs? Does our offense run through Rice now? If we play the run run run style, who will handle the ball if teams double Francis/Moochie? Surely not Mobley, the guy is a walking turnover.

I honestly feel that Rice hurts the team. It takes more than scoring to win basketball games. We already have guys who can score. We need defense and rebounding.

The last time a team traded for Rice, didn't everyone assume they must have another deal lined up to get a center?

That "other shoe" never dropped for them. Hope the Rockets have better luck.

You are on crack if you think we are dealing Moochie. You heard it here - Mooch aint going NOWHERE.

Unless its a Moochie for Payton deal or something we couldnt pass up. Charlie Ward? Are you F****** kidding me? We need a heisman like we need another Cato...

Ray allen's .433 shooting are worth writing home about and paying 9 million per season, specially since the team doesnt have to create a shot for the guy, which makes it even more impressive.

I'll hold judgement until we've added the final piece of our frontcourt, but as OP has already pointed out, don't expect anything earth-shattering.

Unless you expect White to be the second coming....

This coming from someone who put "Raptors" and "Dynasty" in the same sentence!

I'll trust oeilpere and Doc that we will get some help up front. Either way, that frontline is better then the one that smoked Toronto last year. And that team almost made the playoffs!

The difference though Swopa is that the other deal was assumed to be RICE for someone else. This appears to be a deal that involves another player and keeping Rice.

If we get Rice, this makes Williams tradeable. Walt will probably be traded to the Wizards for White. This could be the bad part of the Rice trade but I will still do it.

The idea that fastbreaks cannot happen if guards get rebounds is a misnomer. Fastbreaks are measured by scoring before the defense sets. The point about Barkley quarterback bomb to be an effective fastbreak covers less fastbreak opportunities than steals do.

Fact is: a guard can start a fastbreak equally well by taking a rebound and pushing it. Both Kidd and Magic Johnson tallied many rebounds and are regarded as the best fastbreak runners around.

The outlet pass is a thing of necessity since PFs can't dribble usually, and it is designed to be a short pass not a post pattern. sheesh. Defenses are designed to stop the the post pattern. It is called back-pedaling. Now if a guard gets a rebound, you don't need an outlet pass. RIGHT!! Francis or Mobley grabbing rebounds in the lane allows them to spin and run. Besides there is NOTHING preventing them from throwing it forward to the other releasers anyhow.

I am so serious here Thanos. We can run a fastbreak with guards grabbing rebounds. Your point does not fly with me.

When the Rockets brought Pippen here, this board went nuts. I started a thread with a title something like, "10 reasons why Scottie Pippen will be the greatest acquisition in franchise history." Then, when we finally unloaded that dirtbag, we were whooping it up about snagging Walt Williams in exchange. And wow, this guy Cato! Can he block shots or what? Sign him up, fast!

I'm not falling for that crap again. There is a big difference between rooting for your team in fair weather or foul, and endorsing offseason personnel moves just because your coach, GM, and owner approved them.

Maybe Rice will work out. But right now, the people on this board who support the deal are going to lengths of rationalization just as extreme as the bashing by those of us who don't like it. You can feel everybody straining to find logic and a silver lining in it. There's almost a religious faith in Rudy and CD. Never mind that Rudy and CD are human. Never mind the litany of unwise acquisitions and trades that we keep trying not to talk about so we can focus on Francis and Griffin and the deals that went right. Pippen, Cato, Maloney, Price, etc., etc. Please.

Age, personality, defense, positional glut, and salary commitment are real issues. They'll be with us as long as Rice is a Rocket. We're still paying Matt Maloney. Beware.

Here we go again, another DOC ROCKET post.
Everyone put your thinking caps on!

I just have one thing to say. What is everyone going to say when next year Glen Rice is putting up 20 pts ans is helping the Rockets win ball games? If Rice is here to stay then a true Rockets fan will back him up and give him all the support he needs. Any way isn't winning the bottom line in the NBA?

P.S. DOC, can you give us some more incripted messages to keep us wobdering until the season starts. ;) :D  ;) :D

I admit that when I first got on this site this morning, I was a little shocked. However, I had a feeling something was going on when it was reported several days ago that we were close to re-signing Shandon and then we hear nothing else. Also, don't forget the rumor at one time that we were going to do a sign and trade with the Knicks for Olajuwon and Rice. Obviously, Rudy and CD like Rice. After doing some thinking and looking at the pros and cons of this deal, I think that although it could be risky, this deal could be a steal for the Rockets.

Let's face it: Shandon Anderson was never going to fit in on this team and for him to want more than 5 million for 5 to 6 years so he can average in single digits in PPG, APG, and RPG is not really the best thing for the Rockets, realistically. I was always in favor of signing him and trading him for more "O" (Remember my thread "Shandon Anderson - Sign and Trade Dead?"). Yes, Rice is 34 and he does have a huge contract, but people are delusional if they think that Rudy and CD had this plan of lowballing Hakeem so they can get Rice. Remember, Hakeem never wanted to play for us and he even said it wasn't about money. I think that after Olajuwon left, CD and Rudy said to one another, "Well, the plan of keeping eveybody together will never work now. So, let's try to put together the best team possible."

Eddie Griffin is 19 and in due time, he will be a superstar, but I would be very surprised to see him starting this year. It makes perfect sense, if you really look at it, to have a veteran in his mid 30's as your starter that in 3 years will yield to the up and coming youngster. I don't think there's any question that Walt is gone and hopefully it will be to the Wizards for Jahidi White. It may be until September for that deal to be final, though. Also with Bullard possibly going to Charlotte, I don't see how we would have too many SFs. Here is how I envison the rotation (assuming we trade Walt for Jahidi):

SF - Rice/Griffin/Langhi or Thomas
PF - Taylor/Thomas/Griffin
C - Cato/White/Taylor
SG - Mobley/Langhi/Morris
PG - Francis/Norris/Colson

with Collier on the IR (if not Colson), not a bad team if you ask me. :D

The key to all of this ... the thing that keeps escaping most of the posters attention .... the lapse in common sense that ya'll are passing over ......

Doc R said it .........

I said it ......

Crispee Critter said .....

These moves are NOT over ............

For Gawd's sake .......... CD and RT do this for a living .......... they have made mistakes in the past ......... but the vast majority of their decisions on trades have been (place largest expletive superlative you can understand here) ........ they have holes ... duh they know this ........ they have some options .. duh, they know this ...... they have some opportunities .... duh, they know this .......

Have some patience.

It is not over.

I'm at loss for words. Why, oh why, pray tell, such wasnt the case last year and even though we should have been run and gun we never ran fastbreaks nearly as much as we should have?

Why, oh why, the other team had so many uncontested fastbreak opportunities while our backcourt was trying their best to grab that offensive rebound our frountcourt couldnt?

I respect you a lot crispee, but this does not cut it.

Rice deal may look good now. But, two years from now, are we willing to pay the guy 9 million a year to be T-mo's back up ?

Will, always a pleasure to hear from you. Nice to know that some well-respected and seasoned veterans are siding with me on this one.

Sometimes a a guy with a low post count (though i have been lurking over here for the past 3 years) can have a hard time defending his point of view.

Great post!
