If someone called her and told her about the crack in the butt, and she decided not to send a squad car, then she is not doing her job.

They are SUPPOSED TO SEND A CAR OVER NO MATTER WHAT THE CALLER SAYS/DOES.

It sucks horribly for these people, they are put in high stress situations for the duration of their job, with the only break coming for those stupid kids calling about the crack in the butt. Not a fun job. But that doesn't mean you don't do your damn job, y'know?

This story hit the news because it's a rare tragedy.

In your example, the number of times those odds are put to task within a day are different. I'm pulling hypothetical numbers, but if an average emergency call took 20 minutes for an operator to hang up or dispatch, that'd mean there'd be at least one prank call every other hour. If it takes less time to complete an average call, than there'd be more prank calls during that time.

I don't think it's realistic for a large city to send a squad car everytime there's a wierd call. The operator was human and suffered a lapse in judgement. She wasn't the person who hung up. Unfortunately she didn't have any more basis to determine if it was a real call.

These points wouldn't make the victim's family feel better, nor should they. My points are directed at the public outrage this case is getting. Burning this woman alive won't make the 911 system any more efficient, more right, or more safe. If anything, it'll add more pressure to the operators who make these conscious or unconscious decisions every day.

I really wonder if the people on this BBS represent the mainstream America.

Lets all grab our pitch forks and tar and feather her ... WHY? Because we only know a fraction of what really happened and we could have done a much better job.

But when I was a kid, me and my friends did that. TWICE. And both times a cop came out and tried to scare us that if we do it again they might have to take us to jail. So they have to do it, its their job. I think this woman realizing what she did is bad enought. Mental lapse in judgement. If she violated protocol, fire her. Other than that, you really cant do much else to her.
