Now I am not the once claiming Ukraine didn't have a functional military, however if Russia 'started' the war in 2014 by occupying Crimea, do you not think Ukraine would put together a significant military force? NATO countries sans the US know now that the US will not uphold our Article 5 NATO obligations. If Putin invades Poland or any of the Baltic states, the US will back Putin ... Trump will say something like "they had it coming" ... MAGAs will say that the US has no business in what should be strictly European affairs. The new Germany leadership has already stated that the US can not be trusted.. Europe will need to sort out European affairs, without the help of the US. Any Ukraine deal will need to be made between Russia, Ukraine and Europe.

Of course the US would have agency and not tolerate this. Both sides have agency. An interesting article about what capabilities Europe would need to develop themselves to replace what they used to rely on the US for: Mind the gaps: Europe’s to-do list for defense without the US. TLDR version is that a European effort could still kick the crap out of Russia but it would be bloodier without American enablers in command and control, satellite and aerial intelligence, long range striking, anti-air-defense, satellite communications, and aerial refueling and transport. But, with the political will, they could develop those capabilities in ~5ish years. lol.
