True to a degree - but in less than 36 hours, Russia has pretty much achieved air superiority and is already making its way to Kyiv. It's a fight only in the most basic sense that they are shooting back. But Ukraine is being overrun faster than the Taliban overran Afghanistan, and they didn't even put up a fight.
I'm surprised by the amount of damage Ukraine has been able to inflict -- seems they immediately used hit and run tactics and they are fighting hard. I'm also surprised by the slow deliberate pace Russia is using to advance into Ukraine -- they almost seem tentative. I read that Russia has already burned through their precision munitions and will now have to rely on dumb bombs and rocket barrages.

Part of the air superiority is inherent to geography. The Russians can not only launch attacks from Belarus but they have anti air stationed there as well. The geography is just terrible for most of Ukraine. Russia can launch attacks from Russia, Crimea, the separatist regions and Belarus. This is clearly bad but I do think that this is probably not going as easily for the Russians as they hoped. The Ukrainians definitely aren't rolling over.
None of that would come online anytime soon. Those leases are absolutely irrelevant to this crisis. Big thing will be whether Russia is booted from SWIFT which will probably trigger a surge in oil prices. That's the time where Biden will have to find a way to offset that pain.
