This doesn't really spell it all out.

Standard Russian artillery uses a 152mm shell that is only used by Russia and knock-offs. Ukraine isn't configured to make the shells - they had an extremely large stockpile from the end of the Soviet Union, but they are absolutely burning through thousands of shells every day.

NATO uses a functionally similar, but not interchangeable 155mm shell. In their standard artillery.

So there is an "expiration date" on most of the standard Soviet artillery that the Ukrainians have, and that date was coming uncomfortably close before they captured all this stuff. It still looms in the medium term, but the Ukrainians have been able to keep from losing the use of a significant amount of artillery in their stores by capturing so much ammo.

The NATO guns are better - longer range and more accurate, but the Russian artillery blows up and kills Russians just the same as the NATO stuff.

What is all this @SamFisher stuff supposed to mean?

He obviously doesn't care and nobody else does, can't you just post your stuff (good in this thread!) without the extra annoying bs?

At yesterday’s Judo tournament in Minnesota we had a club that was mostly Russians come and compete. There is Ukrainian family in one of the local clubs.

One match pitted a Ukrainian kid versus a Russian kid. I don’t know their age but probably around 10. During the match they kept in insulting each other and then they started actually fighting outside of Judo rules (throwing punches and kicks) both players were disqualified and ejected from the tournament.

Shows how high tensions are even well outside of region.

    Translation:

In Yerevan, several hundred demonstrators gathered for a protest demanding the withdrawal of Armenia from the CSTO, since the organization did not take any measures to prevent attacks from Azerbaijan.

The rally takes place on the day of the arrival of the Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, who condemned Azerbaijan's attacks against Armenia

    ----

For the sign on the bottom right:

    MNNA

    ----

Ukranians crossed the Oskil river at Kharkiv and control both banks. The Oskil was the natural barrier that the Russians fled behind when they left Kharkiv thinking it would keep them safe.

Ukranians now can flood troops into the rest of Kharkiv Oblast, and then on into Luchansk Oblast, where I've seen some indications that they should be able to roll, because the northern half of the oblast is apparently very sparcely populated.

    Translation:

The Armed Forces forced Oskil, now the Ukrainian military controls not only the right, but also the left bank of the river in the Kharkiv region - StratCom

Also, first snow of the year fell in Ukraine meaning the rainy season is here, and that's going to slow everything down.

    Translation:

❄ In Ukraine, the first snow fell on Mount Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi.

"As of 08:15, 18/09/2022, it is cloudy on Mount Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi, visibility is limited. It is snowing. The wind is south-west, 6-8 m/s. The air temperature is -1°С," the Chornohirskyi Mountain Search and Rescue Service reported post

We didn’t invite the Russian club but this is an open tournament and anyone can compete as long as they are a member of USA Judo for liability purposes.

Also this being the US I would be against discriminating against ethnic Russians or even Russian citizens who are not part of their government or military.

Wouldn't it have been in the best interest of the tournament organizers to not allow this match to happen in the first place?

I wasn’t one of the organizers so had no say in who enters. I wasn’t even a referee during that match. I would’ve done exactly what the organizers and ref did. This is sports competition in Minnesota, USA. It is not the battlefield or is it even the Olympics. This is a match between kids. We shouldn’t be allowing geopolitics to intervene or decide who can or can’t play. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen bitterness and acrimony in a tournament. There’s stuff like this between rival players, rival families and rival clubs. If we were to decide not to allow a match between tie players who have a background of not liking each other how far do we go? Do we not allow a Muslim player to play a Jewish player? Do we not allow a player from a Taiwanese family to play one from a PRC family?

This is sports and the message should be we compete hard but within the rules and we leave the rest of the stuff behind. If the Russians or Ukrainian families want to withdraw that is there business but I’m not going to ban them before hand.

On the international scale such controversies have happened. Judo is very popular in both Islamic countries and in Israel. A few Islamic countries have forbidden their players to compete against Israelis at international competition. Iranian Judoka Saed Molaei defected from Iran because he competed against Israelis at World Competition.

The International Judo Federation could simply say we won’t allow matches between Islamic countries and Israel but they don’t. Neither the IJF or IOC have banned competition between Islamic and Israeli Judoka. They would skew international competition but also be a horrible precedent to set.
