Panetta on Russia-Ukraine situation: There's 'no question' that American lives are 'going to be at stake' if conflict breaks out

    https://thehill.com/policy/defense/...on-theres-no-question-that-american-lives-are

    excerpt:

Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said there is “no question” that American lives are “going to be at stake” if conflict breaks out between Russia and Ukraine amid escalating tensions between the two countries.

Greta Van Susteren asked Panetta in an interview to be aired on Sunday if he anticipates U.S. troops being used in a support capacity or actual fighting.

“I think the president is, I'm sure, thinking of them in a support capacity. But let's face it, right now there are military advisers, U.S. military advisers in the Ukraine working with the Ukrainians to try to develop their capabilities. And so if something happens, there's no question that U.S. lives are also going to be at stake here,” Panetta said.

The Obama-era Defense secretary said that he did not believe that sanctions against Russia “are the issue that is going to turn this around,” though he noted that certain sanctions could be used to hurt the country.

“But I think this comes down still to a military issue because I think what will persuade Putin is whether or not, if he engages in war, he could get a black eye. And one thing bullies don't like to do is to get a black eye,” Panetta explained. “And I think that's where our strongest leverage is."

"So I think supply to the Ukrainians, moving our forces up into NATO, deploying our aircraft and our ships ... I think that's the most important deterrent we have right now with regards to Russia," he added.

Because Trump doesn't care how many people Putin kills. Trump idolizes that dictating killer.

It’s simpler than even that. With Trump in office the 5 eyes would never okay and effort to assassinate or stage a coup against Putin. Without Trump no longer in office and in control of top CIA objectives he’s paranoid and feels like it’s now or never to go for gold and secure his grasp of his share of the world.

I don’t think Putin is all that well anymore and his lack of public appearances now is a tell tale sign. When dictators start doing what he’s doing throughout history, it never ends well.

The only though can probably speak to his state of mind is Biden, the intelligence officials who listen to their calls, and Russia’s inner circle. The US doing what it’s doing now kind of gives me mixed feelings, but all signs point towards him doing something, and the US strategically going after the money that backs Putin which might or might not finally change the situation in Russia. The hope surely is that not too many people have to die in Ukraine in order for that change to happen.

Either way it seems as though status quo is unlikely. He’s a dictator acting as though it’s do or die time. I’d like for someone to tell me when that doesn’t end up in bloodshed in some way throughout history?

The mayor of Kiev which I’m a big fan of when he was still in the rings, said he’s gonna put on his old uniform and fight the Russians if they would have invaded Ukraine. How many of the cowardly Dem politicians we have in this tattered and torn Republic would have done the same?
