15-20% of whites in the American Colonies were British Loyalists during the Revolutionary War. Only 40-45% supported the Revolution. The rest were either neutral or just didn't make their thoughts known.

I'd say that we've truly been a divided country since the beginning and that there are some folks now that wouldn't support the Colonies if the Revolution happened today.

And he hedged heavily like a good politician would. That isn't necessary a bad sign. If he was not joking, then what....

Too bad the video cut off too soon. I wonder if he ever answer the question if that is appropriate? The press should push for this type of answer with every member of Congress they talk to concerning this.

We have always been politically divided. It's actually a strength - competition with the best of both sides bubble up. And it will continue to be one as long as we have a constructive democracy. The political fighting has been as bad, as early as right after Washington. However, except for the civil war, over time it has always resulted in a stronger nation - through democracy. What's so dangerous today is not that we are politically divided, that there is strong partisanship, but that we (a significant enough of us, a party so fearful of losing their identity and privilege) are willing to destroy democracy. Except for the early days, during the time of the writing of the Constitution itself, I believe it's a first in our nation history that our democracy is at risk.

The more they did the more corruption they will uncover, Trump has always been a crook, and plays by his own rules ignoring laws....

As more of it comes out, the tide will continue to turn and those Senators will come around, they are hedging their bets right now....

I have a good friend in politics in the East coast area - he believes that Pelosi already has a deal to get him out with the Senate, but that they need to uncover a lot of what they know is there, so they can save face with their base.

DD, honestly, I just don’t see it. So many of the senators are already taking up the embarrassing “oh he was um kidding” defense. That’s not the rhetoric of someone just waiting for the right moment to take a stand.

    You're friend is misinformed.

    They are doubling down.

You had one Republican Senator say he doesn't remember signing a letter he sent calling for the removal of the Ukrainian prosecutor because he doesn't want to defend Biden. You have Ron Johnson (might have been same one?) spouting conspiracy theories on national tv. You have Mitch McConnell openly campaigning on being the one who will stop impeachment.

I mean sure, Mitt Romney is troubled and Susan Collins wants us to please think of the children, but no way the Republican Senate removes Trump. Honestly I don't think it would matter what he did, they'd never turn on him. Graham knows the deal. The Republican party has turned into the party of Trump. That's it. There are no beliefs or values left for the majority of the voting base beyond Trumpism and anti-immigration. All it takes to be pegged as a traitor is going against Trump. That's it.

Wow. Yeah, these are incredibly scary times. Elected officials literally saying they trust the least honest public official in memory over our intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

With moves like Johnson’s, you can no longer call it a political party. When you refute basic objective truth in your allegiance to one narcissist, the only appropriate word for your organization is “cult.”
