Uhhh...Study finds median wealth for single black women at $5

DFWRocket, I am not disagreeing with you at all.

 

I blame the rap industry and their promotion of one's facade over self. It defines the morals and lifestyles for trashy and classy black girls, and no one has the vision to take it back to the Teddy Pendergrass days when it was about the real thing. The sad thing is most black women in debt live on a prayer of hope that a hustling millionaire will pull them out off their financial troubles just in the nick of time. The line between fantasy and reality is hazy, at best.

 

I haven't calculated it any time recently, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if my net worth is currently negative. Doesn't mean I'm not living well though. While I'm sure the average black woman isn't rolling in dough, I don't think this average net worth is a good indicator.

the reality of the situation is black women are tied to black men, whose situation is probably worse on the whole

It's all about the hustle. Getting yours. Staying hard.

Metropolis's like Houston and Atlanta are perfect examples of black women constantly living week to week in short term fantasies and not working constructively towards a long term vision. The hedonistic lifestyle isn't for everyone, but they aren't taught that growing up. You need to have actual security before you can afford to have a certain mentality, and it's dreaming too big too early that gets a lot of young black women in trouble.

I can almost guarantee that black women have more financial security than black men. Alot of people of all races are living from paycheck in today's society. Before the financial crisis "american", not african, caucasion, mexican, etc., but americans as a whole had a negative savings rate.

I posted in another thread about 60 minutes last night, they were interviewing michael lewis, the guy who wrote "liar's poker" and who is writing a book on the current financial meltdown. he interviewed a few investors who saw it coming.

One guy is a former doctor and one thing he said as far back as 03, he knew how many Americans are a "broken refrigerator away from defaulting on their mortgage"

The reality is that black women have kids and parents and grandparents to support. You guys are living in a young twenty something bubble if you think they are spending all their bucks on looking good.

Not to switch from race, always an intersting topic, but if white women have a net wealth of $40k, it hardly makes sense for them or the vast majority to vote for the GOP or libertarian types.

I can see that. Seems like a vicious cycle for black women and their children. Women having children out of wedlock and at early ages probably contribute to the dependents but how do you stop that? I saw a startling statistic that something like 70% of black children are born out of wedlock and of those children, 70% don't have a father figure around (can't remember the exact numbers). How can you prevent young and impresionable girls from making mistakes when there's no dad around and the mom is already working 2 jobs to keep food on the table and the rent paid? It seems like a vicious cycle that won't end any time soon.

 

actually my opinion is based on some well known facts that i didn't think I had to state. number of black men in prison. number of black women with hs diplomas compared to black men. number of black women enrolled in college compared to black women. I remember when I was in college and my friends and I would look at demographics from black colleges, some of them would be 5 to 1 women to men ratios. its really crisis mode.
