Er..this season...the upcoming season..whatever They didn't mention the reason which almost always means grades. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/college/houston/7032176.html By STEVE CAMPBELL Copyright 2010 Houston Chronicle June 1, 2010, 10:18PM The Houston Cougars will find out the hard way just how well they stocked their arsenal of offensive weapons. The Cougars lost their most versatile threat when the NCAA ruled running back Charles Sims is ineligible for the 2010 season. Sims, a Westbury High graduate who had 759 yards receiving and 698 rushing in winning the 2009 Conference USA Freshman of the Year award, will remain in school but cannot compete in any games this season. He will have two years of eligibility remaining after he serves his NCAA sanction. “We're planning on him being back next year,” UH head football coach Kevin Sumlin said. In a release issued by the university on Tuesday, Sumlin praised Sims for his attitude regarding the situation and expects him to continue to have a positive impact on his teammates. Citing privacy laws, Sumlin and university officials refused further comment on the matter. The Cougars led the nation in scoring and total offense in 2009, but the off-season has brought a litany of unwanted change. Offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen left for Oklahoma State, and some unexpected departures are undermining successor Jason Phillips' efforts of maintaining the continuity. Receiver A.J. Dugat, the Cougars marquee recruit of 2009, and offensive tackle Jarve Dean, an All-C-USA Second Team selection, were dismissed for violations of team rules. Receiver L.J. Castile decided to forego his senior season and concentrate on getting his degree. Of course, the Cougars still have a Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback, Case Keenum, and 1,000-yard receivers James Cleveland, Tyron Carrier and Patrick Edwards. They have four starting offensive linemen (tackles Roy Watts and Jacolby Ashworth, guard Chris Thompson and center Jordan Shoemaker) who got significant time as starters last season. They have four starting offensive linemen (tackles Roy Watts and Jacolby Ashworth, guard Chris Thompson and center Jordan Shoemaker) who got significant time as starters last season. They also have Bryce Beall, a junior from Tatum who two seasons ago rushed for 1,247 yards and was the C-USA Freshman of the Year. Injuries and the emergence of Sims cut into the playing time of Beall, and his rushing total fell to 670 yards last season. For those with short memories, Beall accounted for more combined rushing and receiving yards as a freshman (1,743) than Sims (1,457) did. Beall averaged 7.5 yards per touch and scored 17 touchdowns as a freshman, compared to Sims' 7.2 and 10.
It's a blow no doubt but they still have Bryce Beall, Chris Wilson, and Justin Johnson at running back. They also have James Cleveland, Tyron Carrier, and Patrick Edwards all back at the wide receiver postition. That is more than enough playmakers. I will never be worried about the offense as long as Sumlin is here. I am anxious to see how the defense will be under Brian Stewart and the new 3-4 defense. They couldn't be any worse than the last 2 years.
We might can make due with Beall and company...but he struggled for big parts of last year...and Sims looked to really be coming into his own. I agree though that defensive improvement is key.
Beall's the man, and isn't there some shifty-type freshman coming in that should see some playing time? UH should be fine
