We need to get a guy who can do something that nobody has done in this town for years...

    Recruit IN HOUSTON.

The pressure is really on UH Basketball now that the football team has been brought back to respectability and the womens' team is in the tournament. It's inexcusable for the home of Phi Slamma Jamma to have cratered so completely in the last 20 years.

Good guy, bad coach. Somebody needs to inject some life into this program fast. It's circling the drain.

I'd bring Drexler back. At least he brought in some real talent. Eventually that talent is going to take over if you keep bringing it in. Coaches can learn on the job just the same as players can.

Please...for the love of God.....I hope you're not Dave Maggard.

No big name is necessary. Art Briles & Joe Curl have proven that. I'd be happy with a respectable team that can clean up in Conference USA & win it's fair share outside of conference.

I wasn't around for the Guy V. Lewis years, so I refer to the Pat Foster era as the "glory days", and that's just sad :(

Here's hoping for better days ahead.

Hopefully as the football team gets better the school's name will improve and look better to recruits.

Also, we probably need to get some better hookers or something... damn!

In 1998: The class is made up of Antonio Falu, George Williams and Chris Anderson, who all signed their official letter of intent. Ranked as the top recruiting class in Texas.

In addition to that, They left one scholarship open for Yao Ming.
Hehad till the 17th to sign during the fall signing period. He could not sign at the time due to his committment to CBA.

in 2000: His class was ranked in the top 15 in the Nation. Some outlets had top 20 but no lower than that.

Clyde's name alone was turing the tide.

Listening to the radio today you'd think they sold that place out with all that seem to care and have an opinion after he got fired.

Pat Foster had some good teams. I always wondered why they sunk so low after he left...what was he doing that was so special? Seems like I always heard that he would recruit JuCo guys, where others were hesitant to do that. The team he had w/Bo Outlaw, Goldwire, and Byron Smith was pretty darn good. I think I'll always root for UH even though I didn't go there.

I think McCallum was a good coach, btw. His teams just weren't.

    Except that he:

    a) couldn't coach
    b) didn't care
    c) wasn't willing to work

His teams were not good, but he did recruit some big name locals, who played a combined 4 seasons at UH (3 by Williams, 1 by Ford). It was a pr move, pure & simple, and a total disaster.

I go out on a limb & hire Josh Pastner. Great background, has learned under one of the best ever (Lute Olson) and has ridiculous connections to the local H.S. scene.

    From the Chronicle:

Rumored potential replacements include former Cougar David Rose, a BYU assistant; former Rockets and NBA coach John Lucas; Arizona assistant Josh Pastner; and UTEP coach Billy Gillispie.

Whatever happened to that guy? He was really hyped back then and then I never heard about him again.

I don't know about Gillespie, but that turnaround is sort of impressive.

Pastner is a really, really good recruiter. Of course it doesn't hurt when you have $60K to throw around supposedly.

Lucas would be the best choice as a coach IMO.

    Imagine this team under Drexler

    Yao Ming C
    C. Anderson PF
    G. Williams SF
    Gervin SG
    Falu PG

That's a final four team. But it wasn't meant to be.

Only because of the center, take out Yao Ming, and it's a team that's fortunate to get to the NIT. Being able to recruit athletes is all well and good, but it helps if you actually a) can coach them, b) give enough of a damn to try.

drexler had great recruiting class, but the problem was he couldn't get them into school. taylor x2, falu, anderson, yao, booker, lyman, the nigerians, etc. never made to uh.

richarson would be a good choice right now. he could recruit in houston and nationally. and he's a proven great coach if not a little old. lucas would be okay too. he had an nba pedigree and houston recruiting connections. josh pastner is the real interesting choice though. great recruiting connections, although he's only 25 yrs old. apparently nic wise said he would decommit to arizona if pastner was hired. who ever the choice is, he better be able to recruit in the houston area.
