Uh-oh Those NY picks might not be that valuable after all in trade

Joe Johnson is not going to carry the Knicks to anything good. As for Bosh, who knows whether he even wants to play in New York.

Johnson/Bosh is probably the very best case for them and with that supporting cast, that combo is a first round exit every year. Even if that happens, the picks will be better than ours, and this is Morey we're talking about. He can find something good in the middle of the first round.

If it's going to be Joe Johnson and Chris Bosh, then the Knicks will likely have to use every dollar of possibly available cap room to sign (or trade) for both of them. That probably means that Sergio Rodriguez is a goner. You'd be looking at the following lineup:

    PG: Toney Douglas
    SG: Joe Johnson
    SF: Wilson Chandler
    PF: Danilo Gallinari
C: Chris Bosh (who HATES playing center!)

    Bench:
    Eddy Curry
    over-the-hill veteran who likes NY
undrafted guy from summer league team
    scrub
    another scrub
    yet another scrub
    some other scrub

Yeah, . . . I'm not so sure that team makes the playoffs in the East. I wouldn't bet against it, but there are at least 6 teams in the Eastern Conference that will be better than that Knicks team.

The funny thing is . . . this is the best plausible scenario for the Knicks.

Enjoy another decade of competitive basketball irrelevance, New York!

Bosh and Johnson would be an excellent duo BUT they would have NO bench or "D". The picks may not be as great as expected but still mid 1st rd selections are tradeable asset i'd happily take. Plus, I have the feeling the 2012 choice won't be with us after this offseason anyway.

    Rodriguez/Douglas
    Johnson
    Chandler
    Gallanari
    Bosh/Curry

The rest of the roster are league minimum guys, so does that lineup truly scare you? That would be one of the softest teams in the league with a coach who plays NO "D"...

And a bench like that means over playing your starters which increases the odds of them getting put on the IR - which makes your team even worse.

Well, NY already lows the expectation from James, Wade to Johnson. Next target for NY could be Gay if the Atlanta somehow resigns Johnson or trades him to Houston.

Good point. Not that hard to imagine a scenario where Bosh and Johnson go down for significant playing time. That would be a bottom 3 team in the East.

Well, I have to backtrack a little bit. The Knicks will have two early second round picks in this draft. My guess is that at least one of them would be a serviceable player for them off the bench. Hell, with their lack of depth, maybe he'll be a starter by default!

But the fact remains that Johnson and Bosh would basically have to play all 82 games for them to be anything more than a low playoff seed in the East. More likely, each of them misses about 8-10 games, and the Knicks have a VERY poor record when missing even one of those two guys.

Something else to consider, with regards to the Knicks' ability to fill out their roster, is this: if negotiations for a signing/trade, for either of the two stars they intend to add, drag on, it will prevent the Knicks from being able to sign free agents even to the veteran's league minimum! Since the veteran's league minimum is higher than the roster charge amount (equal to the rookie league minimum) that MUST count against the Knicks' cap if they renounce all their players, New York would risk reducing its cap space to even sign a veteran on the cheap. It won't be until AFTER Johnson and Bosh (or whoever the two stars are) are both in the fold, with the contracts signed and everything, that the Knicks could add ANYBODY. By then, some of the "value guys" may have taken offers with other teams.

Couldnt they buy out Curry? Why wouldnt they be able to re-sign Sergio?

Why would the Knicks be any worse than the Hawks? Joe Johnson = Joe Johnson, Wilson Chandler ~ Marvin Williams, Chris Bosh > Josh Smith.

I still think D'Antoni will pull for Joe Johnson and Amare.

    PG: Sergio Rodriguez | Douglas
SG: Joe Johnson | Bill Walker
SF: Tracy McGrady | Danilo Gallinari
    PF: Wilson Chandler
    CN: Amare Stoudemire

Depends if those scrubs are actual scrubs or if the Knicks can pull an Eddie House or James Posey like Boston did when they assembled their big 3.

    Based on current standings
    1. Cleveland -- sure
    2. Orlando -- sure
    3. Atlanta -- not if they lost Joe Johnson
    4. Boston -- maybe; depends on if they keep Ray Allen and if they can stay healthy
    5. Milwaukee -- Eh. Maybe.
    6. Toronto -- Not if they lose Bosh
    7. Charlotte -- Maybe. Depends what they do.
    8. Miami -- Depends what they do.
    9. Chicago -- Maybe

What other team in the East could make a big leap up?

My quick look only sees 2 sure fire teams in the East (assuming LeBron stays in Cleveland). Losing Bosh and Joe Johnson would probably send both of their respective teams tumbling. That leaves you with an aging Boston, a potential upstart Charlotte, an underachieving Chicago team, and a wild card in Miami.

I don't see how those teams would be unequivocally better than a Bosh/JJ team.

This comment was a joke right??? They have not been able to pick any picks in recent years in the first round that have amounted to anything or they just do not even try to develop them. Remember, we got their 8 pick Hill that they never really even gave a chance??? The only 2 players they have picked in the last 10 years to average over 12ppg is David Lee and Wilson Chandler.

You say Bosh but then you have Amare on the depth chart.

Comparing to the Hawks, they don't have a Bibby caliber PG, and Jamal Crawford off the bench, or an additional big as good as Horford and Pachulia. That's a world of difference.

you clearly don't watch many knicks game, but then again who does. I have watched 10 or so this year, yes he is on a bad team and SOME of his rebounds may be from this, but he is a good player, not a superstar, on the all star boarder, he isnt flashy, but he is effective and much better than jordan hill at this point

Agreed. Joe Johnson and Amare played together for D'Antoni before.

As others have said, I'm not too concerned about the Knicks. They won't be a top-5 lottery pick (unless they waste their cap space as badly as Detroit did this summer), but it would be hard for them to remain this bad no matter what.

They should put together a decent top-6, but their bench is going to be pathetic.

That, and D'Antoni can't get guys to play defense to save his life. If they get a numbers guy like Amare, they'll be like the Golden State Warriors East.

I don't think they will get LeBron which means they flopped in terms of selling this move to the Knicks fans but they play in the East so if they can get Joe Johnson/Chris Bosh or Joe Johnson/Amare Stoudemire they most likely will make the playoffs.

I hope the Knicks end up paying the max to Rudy Gay.

TMAC is the key. If TMAC is healthy and motived, this Knicks team would look to get into top 5 lottery teams.

Even if the pick is not as high as we want it to be Morey has proved he can do a lot with any pick.
