I dont know that much about the guy. but this is the first time in a long time that I've seen UH get any attention for mens basketball so I guess it's a good thing for their program... too bad this is overshadowing the womens team....
It was a nice effort by Penders to scapegoat Oran, that is after all why Oran sued him - but it was Penders who had the grades faxed. It was one of the myriad of things several of his players complained about to the AD. He might turn UH around, he might not. He didn't do any good at George Washington, after all.
So there was proof that Penders had the grades faxed? So Oran won the lawsuit against Penders? Why did UT buyout his contract and save $600,000? Couldn't they have just outright fired him for something as outrageous as faxing Luke Axtell's grades? There was some type of disagreement about the renegotiation of Penders contract and Penders went to Joe Jamail to have it straightened out. Couldn't AD Dodds(sp?) have been looking for a reason to fire Penders before the faxing incident? So why would he be offered a broadcasting job by the UT Regent even after the faxing incident? If he were psychotic enough to drunkenly call players in the middle of the night and I knew about it I sure as hell wouldn't want him broadcasting on my company.
Penders did not do a thing to his players except to stand up against the spoiled Luke Axtell. There were 4 players that supposedly met with the AD, Deloss Dodds. 2 of them were on the news last night defending Penders, and I dont know who the 4th player was. Axtell was stirring up trouble, the others regret being apart of it.
I am not a real basketball announcer, I just play one on the BBS. And I'm just relaying stories my Autin, UT booster buddies told me. I did enjoy watching Pender's UT teams play though. Being a Texan, it was fun to see the program rise to national prominance. For Uof H I would have preferred a coach who was hooked up to local scene. It seems to me their only recruiting hope is keeping Houston talent at home (or perhaps recruiting in Nigeria).
