There's many factors that contributed to the student/alumni/community apathy. Its not some kind of mystery. I love how back in the days before bigtime professional sports in Houston, the coogs were pulling in 50,000 on a regular basis... kind of tells you what is possible.. and the ceiling is higher now, a lot higher. Trust me, the atmopshere and attitude has changed 180 degrees since even my days on Cullen blvd.
What reason does any BCS conference have to change up their current lineups? The Pac-10 can add 2, The Big Ten could add 1 and The Big East could add 4 teams to expand to 12. Does UH fit geographically with the Pac-10 or Big East? The BCS conferences have teams which are basically in the same regions of the country. Chances are The Big Ten wouldn't give UH a look and would probably try to lure Notre Dame to the conference, which is also a long shot. There has been some talk of The Big Ten luring Nebraska or Missouri to their conference as well as Syracuse, Rutgers, or Pittsburgh. If they did this, that would affect other BCS conferences obviously but I think there are more attractive choices than UH. I will say this, it is not completely unthinkable for UH to join a BCS conference. I mean 5 years ago, would any of us have believed that Cincinnati or South Florida would be in a BCS conference? I still think there is no real chance of it happening.
My beef has more to do with the ignorance/prejudice associated with the subject, rather than the subject itself. I enjoy kicking around these hypotheticals with people who can discuss matters objectively, its a lot of fun to think what if. I've been doing my part, and I'm very excited about the possibilities for UH for the future. If you want to call that a "chip on my shoulder" then go ahead. But i'm more inclined to think that the people who make a point to come in to threads like this and sh*t all over everything are the ones with this supposed chip.
I still say the texans should adopt something similar... "and that's another Houston Texans first down! MoooooO!!!!"
Anything is possible but there would have to be some major re-shuffling for anything to happen... "IF" this were to happen, I think UofH would be considered, especially if the folks like South Florida and Cincy are in...The Facilities at UofH have improved dramatically and all that is left is for a stadium, which I admit, still needs fans on a consistent basis... Btw, DonnyMost is a true Coog...Right on brother...
1)The Oregon duck is r****ded if it thinks it's the only one that does pushups. 2)Shasta, the original live mascot, was a girl. Shasta is a combination of "she has to". When they went to the guy in a costume they made Shasta a guy and later added a female mascot called Sasha.
There WILL be major conference shakeup in the future. Everyone likes to think that things will stay the same . . . until they change. So it's going to happen, it's just a matter of when, where, and why.
All Cotton Bowls in the mid to late seventies - SWC Coogs beat Maryland 30 -21 top 10 ranking 77 Coogs beat Nebraska 17 -14 on a Danny Davis pass to Eric Herring in the waning seconds in a Classic top 10 ranking 80 Coogs lose to Notre Dame as Joe Montana leads ND back from a 34 -12 halftime deficit....unfortunately another Classic. 79 In just these three years the Coogs were ranked somewhere between 3 - 10 in the final polls. The Coogs said hello to the SWC by beating UT 30 - 0.....and that year during the above four that's missing.......ND 38 - UT 10 Many might not remember the Dome being half full of Cougars on one side and with Razorbacks,Horns,Aggies, etc.on the other. That place rocked for such a sterile environment during that era. We As Donny mentioned would fill the Dome on a regular basis. Look we all know the SEC is the best conference in college football....and their fans travel like a mother just like all you Horns and Aggies. All I'm saying is to look at the past, present, and how things likely project out into the future. The Big 12 isn't going to be chopped up and UT or A&M definitely aren't going anywhere. We aren't even really talking HOOPS in this conversation yet. CUSA was built to be a basketball conference, but because of that rift between the AD and the President the University didn't spend the extra 100,000 or whatever it was and didn't get Tubby Smith when he was all but signed seled and delivered.I see Penders as most likely a bridge to a younger high profile coach......But Cougar HOOPS is on it's way back.If Lanny Smith doesn't go down lst year,we're in the tournament. Anyway,as MajorMal mentioned football is KING in our fair state.Texas oozes the most talent in the nation.A long time ago a special man named Bill Yeoman came along and changed the game forever.Well, one of his own is here to resurrect what was and what will be.Art Briles is committed to bringing us back......and he's doing it. It's just a matter of time. And for you First Lady......Our mascot SHASTA prowled the sidelines...not in a cage, just on a leash....a real live Cougar. You could pet Shasta if you knew the right people (not at the game for the most part though)
there are soo many things I could refute from the past 4 pages of posts, but- #1- thank you for clarifying the shasta/ she has to name, i was just about to post that. Thats one of the few things based on tradition... #2- Most of this is a self-fulfilling prophecy. U think that if UH was in the SEC and had a 60k stadium, it couldnt fill it up? you gotta be kidding me. if any of the lsu, bama, florida, or arkansas teams came to play, not only would their fans flock to robertson, but UH alums and the like would come as well. for the average person, its not the most exciting thing in the world to go see a football game against the all-powerful East Carolina Pirates. most people would rather spend their money on something else. for the record, there are a large group of students at EVERY football game. #3- u aggies and longhorns, before you tell us to get some real competition, why dont u stop running away from us? every time we've tried to play you, youve run away scared. and dont say u have better opponents to play. im pretty sure that game would dram more attendance and better ratings than the arkansas st- UT or Montana State-TAMU game. #4- people dont realize how popular UH is. u just think UT and TAMU are more popular because their grads put those metallic decals on the back of their cars and what not. there are more UH alums in houston than any other college, BY FAR. Alums just havent been at games because we havent had much to cheer about lately (cept at the CUSA championships where we sold out and had a ton of alumni come... again with that self-fulfilling prophecy, if UH is allowed to play with some legit competiton in a real conference, then we would fill up roberston at every game easily... furthermore, for those of you who go to kyle field or memorial stadium, dont u ever notice that whenever UH's score is posted, people cheer (and when rice is posted, people boo... im not kidding)? we have widespread appeal. #5- Baylor getting into the Big 12 was so bullsh*t, no one can deny that. UH just got screwed. #6- Ruck Fice, Tuck Fexas. GO COOGS *altogether now* WHOOOOSE HOOOUSE?!?!?!
Texas is not a good fit in the SEC. The rumors are always Texas to the Big 10, ATm to the SEC. Anyway, it isn't happening. Texas officials have said they would never subject their athletes to that kind of travel schedule. Why the hell would the big 12 want a garbage program like UH? They had 1 good year and endless awful ones. If the Big 12 adds another program, it would be TCU. You want to get into a big conference, make it into the top 25 poll every year and go 5-1 against big 12 opponents and BEAT MIAMI. You should not have to have huge opponents coming into town to fill up your stadium. If the city of Houston actually cared about UH football like you think they do, then they would fill it every week. You think that all non big conference teams have those problems? You are making these huge leaps in logic and assuming that the stars will just align once UH makes it to the big conference. Everything will fix itself. UH wants to play texas so bad because they want the money, like every other small school asking to get destroyed by a big money program. It's hard to argue with someone who is so delusional that they think Texas is afraid of UH after scheduling home and homes with OSU and TCU. And as far as popularity, if yo honestly think that UH is as popular as Texas,OU,aTm, you must be like 13 years old. Come back to reality man.
Say it again with me now... slowly.. UH will never see the Big 12 as long as UT/A&M are involved in that conference.
